Generals Turn Tables On TaftinSaturdayBasketball GameBy Bill Na::?wrThe Generals turned thectables here Saturday night on the Taft ' crew that beat the Shatter five a week ago 96-52. The scrappy General* dominated the hardwood action from the opening tipoff to the final buzzer and emerged victorious 77-60 for their weekend win._ The Taft crew tried to repair the early lead built up by the Generals by employing the fulf-court press but Shafter guards Belton Banks and Danny Costello added “insult to injury” when they broke the press wide-open and increased their teams early Jead. Costello at times seemed uncanny with beautiful assists, while Banks ran and faked like an end on the football squad as he broke loose numerous times, caught the longpass and dumped in the bucket.The Generals shot an unbelievable 54% from the field and Coach Hampton believes the game to be their finest output of the season. vWalt Loewen, who seems to be as steady as Gibralter, turned in another fine offensive performance bagging a big 28 points.The Genera:* were able to restrain the Taft five by maintaininga tight defense and at the sameK rebounded well on both theisive ami defensive boards. Pdrward Mark Larson impressed everyone that he is overcoming his fbotbali injuries by grabbing 14 rebounds.Coach Hampton started MerleSirdner at the other forward slot d believes that Merle's perform-aptce was the best of his varsitydb eu.It must have been a special victory for Coach Hampton, who hails from Taft. This was his first victory over a Taft five since he started coaching basketball at Shafter.The Bucks lost to Taft 43-26 and the Colonels went down in defeat. 34-43.The Junior varsity game which was played in the morning was a very close contest with the Shafter Jayvee^ winning at 53-42. Playing a good offensive and defensive game for Shafter was Bruce Bryant.The ball teams will travel to Arvin Thursday for the A game beginning at 3 p.m., followed by the B and C games.North will play Shafter here Friday night with the C contest beginning at 4 p.m., followed by the B and A games.The Bakersfield tournament will begin next Monday. Dec. 21. andShafter’s first opponent will beKern Valley.
