Football Players Given Awardf^ At 18th Annual Civic BanquetBill Barnes, UCLA football coach, congratulated the award-winning football players, Thursday night at Shatter's 18th Annual Civic Football Banquet, saying, ‘•You are the fellows who gave a little extra/'Barnes also assured the winners that they should be proud of their achievements hut warned against being “smart alecks”, saying that no coach wanted that type of boy on his team.Barnes urged the boys to get good grades in school telling them that it will become increasingly harder to get into the school of their choice and that good grades would get them into almost any school.Barnes said that there were 22,000 students at UCLA now and that by 1989 there was an anticipated 27,000 that would register. He quoted other figures for .southern California colleges and universities to show the pressures being exerted for entrance to schools.Barnes, who started his careerat UCLA in 1950, under Red Sanders, has been head coach since 1958 and is in the midst of changing from the single wing offense to the T.Barnes “complained” about the schedule that faced his team this past season, with four out of town games in a row, one game at home and then two more away. The team traveled some 16,000 miles during the .season.
