College of San ta Fe ready for MavericksBy WALTER K. LOPEZ The New Mexican StaffCollege of Santa Fe coach Roger Dutremble isn’t making any alibis for the Knights’ sub*.500 record.“There really isn’t any excuses,” Dutremble said about the Knights’ current 3-4 mark. “We should be 6-1 right now. The second loss (97-81 to Abilene Christian), in my opinion, is the only loss we should have had. They beat us fair and square.”After surging above the .500 barrier at 3-2 for the first time in four years following a sweep of their own City Different Jaycees Invitational Tournament, the Knights dropped two in a row on the road to Colorado schools (82-78 to Fort* Lewis and 70-66 to Adams State) to dip to 3-4.Saturday night, Colorado again furnishes the competition in Mesa College from Grand Junction, but the scene shifts to the friendly confines of the College of Santa Fe gym where the Knights are 2-0 this season.Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.Mesa will carry an impressive 6-2 record into the Capital City and the Mavericks shape up as one of the Knights’ tougher foes this season, according to Dutremble.“They have a real good team,” he said. “Their only two losses this year were to Montana and Montana State.”Meanwhile, the Knights return to the hard-court following an li-day layoff and Dutremble Is confident that the rest has done the team some good.“It’s helped us because so many of our guys were sick,” he said. (Dwayne) Rogers, (Dan) Donahue and (Kevin) Neal were pretty sick when we played Adams State. All are recovered now, although Rogers still has a pretty bad cold. He’s about 75 percent.”This weekend’s contest will mark the season debut of of 6-8 sophomore forward Harold Good-son, a transfer from Los Angeles Mission Junior College.“He’s going to make us deeper in our bigger people up front,” Dutremble said of Goodson. “He’s a better-than-average rebounder and an average scorer. He’s still pretty young and improving.”Dewey Rivers, the Knights’ highly touted 6-8 former NAIA All-American from Stephen F. Austin University, will become eligible Monday, Dutremble said.Manning starting positions for the Knights Saturday will be 6-0 Larry Kimble and 6-4 Mike Williams at guard, 6-5 Kevin Neal and 6-7 Dwayne Rogers at forward and 6-11 Dan Donahue at center.Three starters are scoring in double figures, including Rogers at 15.7, Williams, 14,8 and Kimble 13.2.Donahue and Neal top all rebounders on the squad with 13.8 and 9.1 averages.“There’s no question in my mind that this is probably the best team at the College of Santa Fe in many, many years,” Dutremble said.
