Foe#Grand Rapidsby PAUL LOGAN A flock of weak taloned Harper Hawks will be heading North (Grand Rapids, Mich.) today in search ot their second prey of the season — Grand Rapids College, who they’ll play on Saturday.The ever lengthening list of injured Hawks swelled to six last Tuesday when star guard Mike Dru ding sprained his ankle in the 91-83 loss to Sauk Valley at the Sterling gym.ALSO SLOWED by the same injury were Tom Keroszturi,Jim Mellen, Bill Keehan, and Dick Helmer. All four stiU haven’t completely recovered from their setbacks. The remaining crippled Hawk is center Dave Willy who hurt his knee a few weeks back.HWilly hasncoveredsaid Coach JohnGelch, who was speaking from bis house while trying to shake the flu bug last week.Gelch termed the predicament of the team as being “a vicious circle.” The team can’t keep in top shape because of injuries and when the injuries are almost healed some more crop up, according to Gelch.“Unfortunately I feel the last two ball games were dropped on conditioning alone,” he said.HARPER led Rock Valley most of the game, sometimes by as much as 15 points, before losing in the waning moments, 33-67, last Saturday at the Elk Grove High School gym.The same happened against Sauk Valley. The Hawks enjoyed leads from time to time but their hosts continued topress, forcing Harper to commit errors, and eventually wearing them out.In last Tuesday’s loss the Hawks, besides being pressed to death, were beaten by the torrid shooting of Sauk Valley’s Bill Harris. Athalftime the Hawks had enjoyed a 43-37 lead and continued tohold-small leads until their big men — Willy, Kiszonas, and Keehan got into foul trouble. Willy eventually fouled out with 16 points. High man for the Hawks was Druding with 17. Seven of those markers came via the foul line. Mellen rounded out the double figure scoring with 10.Rock Valley had four men in twin numbers and none of their Dlavers fouled out of the game.OF THIS Saturday’s Michigan engagement, Gelch had this to say:“They’ve got a good team (4-2 record). They’ve dropped their last two ball games to four-year schools by 20 points each.”Following this lengthy road trip (the longest the Hawks will take unless they get hot in thetournaments), Gelch’s boys will take on Amundsen College next Wednesday at Elk Grove’s gym.
