High .• School during the football awards assembly..Brown was refering to the *1965 Duke varsity team which finished the season with a 4-4-2season.The coach reminded the students that at the beginning of the season it looked like Dublin would have a “disastrous” year, but he said of- . the boys, “they had something that kept thatfrom happening.”He called the 1965 Duke squad which had only three letterinen a group of * ‘believers.”Brown attributed the success, of the team to its spirt. He said the group never stopped believing they could do it, that they showed up for practice and worked after practice to perfect plays.Sam “Doc” Lankford, trainer from Virginia Tech was guest speaker for the assembly.The speaker urged the students to work to maintain good grades throughout high school so that they could gain admission to college.,••You can get through school (college) if you really want to,” he told the DHS students. “Don't let pride, prejudice, color, or rank, get you down.”. Lankford pointed out to the students that athletes are a year round program. He noted that VP1 athlets are kept working all year.“Nothing ;is given you in any school,” Lank, ford told the group. “You will have to work and work hard.”The climax of the assembly was reached when Curtis Graham, a local merchant, presented Jimmy, Hayes the, “Most valuable player” award. Hayes, a co-captain of.the team and senior, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John A, Hayes of Dublin.Varsity, junior varsity, and eighth grade letters were awarded to the football players during the assembly.Coach Sonny Smith, praised Ms JV team for its undefeated season,“I'm very proud of every one of these boys^” Smith said. •Coach Lawrence Johnson praised the eighth gradds spirit during the season..Varsity, letterman for 1965 are Roger Lyons, Mike Anderson, Jim Hayes, Richard Smith, Joe Bishop, Duane Hall, Paul Wilson, Charles Dam-mon, George Morgan, Jerry Whitt, Sam Porter, Gary Jones, Larry Gilbert, Phil Hemenn, Jim '’Hurst, Larry Thompson, tackle Akers, 'Ricky Hurst ahd Steve Ward.Those junior varsity players receiving .'letters were as follows: Junior Moye, Car son Dalton, Michael Lewis, Mike Linkous, Mike Tolbert,Larry Arnold, Benny Tickle, Marvin Barbre Gerald Whittaker, Bonnie Pain, Oakley Friend! Joe Linkous, Ricfiaf’d Lewis, Max Cecil, and Stanley Crigger.The following JV»s also lettered: John Whittaker, Lee Smith, Greg Taylor, Sonny Anderson, Charles Haynes, Gary Howell, Jerry Crane, Perry Dowdy, Harold Osbourne, Joe Jackson,Robert Rowlings, William Wolford, Emmet Hampton, Jerry Harvey, Everrett Farris, Bill Stafford Randy DeHart, and Rodney Whittaker. *Members of the eighth grade squad receiving letters were Mike Lee, Doug Smith, Mike Arm-brister, Triyy Donley, Bobby Hanks, Elroy Eaves, Fred Bishop, Wayne Clark, John Hawley, Mike Whitworth, William Arnold, Eugene Ciild-well and Phil Jackson.Other eighth graders who lettered were as follows: David Guiih, Joe Bowman, Gary Lindsey, Terry Hall, Stuart Williams, Scott Que-senberry, D. D, Conrad, Stacy Stephens, Danny Hall, Kermit Jackson and Johnny Ward.In addition, Coach Brown praised his “taxi” squad, boys who played both varsity and JV ball during the season. They were Johnny Morris, Doug Tucker, Oakley Friend, William Wolford, Gerald Whittaker, and Robert R6bins.
