Lion swimmers capture second in Olathe meetOLATHE — Maybe Lawrence High’s swim team will even top the expectations of head coach Lew Allenthis season.At least that’s the early indication, after the Lions’ surprising second-place finish in Friday’s Olathe North Invitational meet.“Fm shocked,” said Allen whose team scored 181 points, just 21 points behind winner Shawnee Mission South.4‘We led South until the last two events and they’re supposed to be the runaway state champions. To show you how well we did, East was sixth with 90 points. We hadn’t beaten them before now, and we ended up doubling their total.“We showed perfect balance,” continued Allen, “not getting shut out in any event.”The Lions had some state qualifying efforts — from Keith Lisbon in the 100 and 200 freestyle; Eric Myers in the 100 backstroke; George Jander in the 100 breaststroke and Steve King in the 100 butterfly.The Lions will next compete Dec. 18 at the SM East Invitational.Team scoring: SM South 202, Lawrence 181, Olathe North 118, Emporia 116, Raytown 111, SM East 90.LHS placings200medley relay: 3.
