SM East spanks Lionsin Juneau debut, 70-59IBy GARY BEDORE J-W Sports WriterLeave it to Shawnee Mission East’s basketball team to spoil Ted Juneau’s head coaching debut at Lawrence High.“I told him I feel for him,” saidEast coach Dale Graham, momentsafter the Lancers’ 70-59 win over the Lions Friday night in the LHS gym. “It’s kind of an emotional night for a coach. I told him he’ll win a lot more than he loses at this school.”Graham, whose team upped its record to 3-0, insisted he wasn’t merely being gracious to the Lions’ first-year mentor. The Lancers, who owned a 49-38 lead after three quarters, had that lead cut to 60-57 with just 1:53 left.But the Lions were outscored 10-2 in the final moments — ones in which Lawrence frantically tried to take command.“We got behind tonight, and when that happens, you get the urge to push harder,” said LHS guard Carlton Hamm. “When we got it down to three, we should have settled down instead of firing up long jumpers.“This is very disappointing. Tomorrow is coach’s birthday and a win would have been a great present ”HAMM SHOULDN’T feel too disappointed. Juneau’s 32nd birthday celebration hasn’t been ruined.“It’s too bad the point spread went up near the end,” said Juneau. “The kids played awfully tough. It never occurred to me we couldn’t come back. The effort was there all night.”Perhaps the key to the game came at the start of the second half. East outscored LHS, 16-9 the third period, and opened up a comfortable 11-point margin entering the final stanza.“When they went to the zone, it slowed us down,” said Juneau. “That’s where we got hurt. We’ve worked on our zone offense. I didn’t think we’d make him come out of the man that early.“Heck, maybe we should have gone to a zone, too,” said Juneau. “We could second guess ourselves. I guess we’ll live and die with it (man-to-man). We’ll live more than we’ll die,” he added.LHS, WHICH hit 39.3 percent from the field to East’s hot 48.8, took just eight shots during the third period.“In practice we look forward to that zone,” said forward Eric Reed, who scored 10 points. Guard Robb Zinn led the Lions with 14 tallies, while forward Fred Hunter added 11. “We had the shots against it, but for some reason we didn’t want to shoot.”“Coach told us to get down court before they could set up in the zone,”added Hunter. “We got used to it after awhile.”Yes, the Lions did close the Lancers’ gap considerably, but had trouble bottling up East’s big men. Ken Glaser, a 6-6 center, finished with 22 points, while 6-4 forward Mark Logsdon added 16.Lots of their buckets came on follow shots — off the offensive boards.“The problem was we let their big men get easy buckets,” said the 6-2 Hunter. “We weren’t fronting them.”“He (Glaser) was pretty good,” added 6-3 forward Dane Griffin. “Ithink if we had our inside game going, we could have pulled it out. I don’t want to use it as an excuse, but it was their third game and our first one. I’m not discouraged. I think we’ll get it going.”THE LIONS’ next test comes Tuesday at home against Wyandotte, the No. 1-ranked team in the state.“We’ll show up,” said Juneau. “I’m happy with the effort.”The LHS junior varsity stopped East, 66-46. Jeff Johnson scored 13points, Chris Stephenson 12, Rob Steere 11 and Paul Johnson 10 for the Lions.(Staff photo by Julian Gonzalez)Lawrence's Fred Hunter funnels a layup during the Lions' season opener Friday night;
