SM East topplesLHS girls, 52-44PRAIRIE VILLAGE — Shawnee Mission East used a second-quarter full-eourt press to break the game open and went on to a 52-44 triumph over Lawrence in Sunflower League girls basketball Thursday night.Lawrence, playing its first game on the road, had scooted to a 15-10 first-quarter lead before the Lancers put on the press.“We didn’t handle it very well,” conceded LHS coach Gary Johnson. “We kind of panicked. But they used the same press in the second half and we handled it pretty well.”The second-quarter sinking spell was too much for the Lions to overcome, however. They were outscored 18-4 during the period and fell behind, 28-19, at halftime.Claire Masinton, a 5-9 sophomore, led the Lions with 19 points. Michelle Redwood, a 5-10 senior, added 11. Masinton and Redwood made only two of nine free throws combined, however. No other LHS player scored more than four points. The Lions, 0-2, travel to SM Northwest for another league game next Tuesday.
