Both Clubs Won Openers EasilyClippers Enter Tilt With One LettermanSalem’s basketball Quakers will he seeking to preserve a long winning streak Friday when they travel to Columbiana to meet Rich Berryman’s Clippers.The string is 20 straight wins in regular season play. The last time the Red and Black lost in non-tourney action was to Ashland 73-67 in the next to last game during the 1956-57 season.They ended that year with a 64-51 Win over Canton Central Catholic. Last season the Quakers won all 18 regular season tilts and just last Tuesday rang in the 1958-59 campaign with a 64-40 win over Struthers.Salem mentor John Cabas and Berryman have more in common than just being rival coaches. Berryman was captain of the 1945 Columbiana team that won the state Class B championship under the guidance of Cabas.Whereas Salem has four returning lettermen this season including three regulars, Columbiana has but one monogram winner and he didn’t start last season on the Clipper team which won 16 and lost 7.The Clippers advanced far in the state tournament only to be knocked out by Northwestern, the eventual unbeaten Class A king pin.The Clippers’ lone returnee who won a letter is 6-2 Ray Baltz.Berryman, like any other cage j mentor at one time or another, must sacrifice a year in order “to build.’*irhis season is the building year at Columbiana.Only three men are back of 12 that dressed for varsity action last year.Columbiana has only two men who go over 6-feet. They are 6-2 junior Ray Baltz and 6-3 sopho-mjre Don Davidson.ft is quite evident that Berryman is building this year.
