HAROLD WISE IS HELD FOR THEFT OF 2 VEHICLES; CANDY IS CLDEHarold Wise, formerly of near Westminster, Maryland, more recently a resident of Midway but who gave his most recent address as Lit-tlectown R. 1, was lodged in the Adams county jail in default of $1,-000 bail on charges of thefts of two automobiles Friday night.Constable H. S. Roberts, Littles-town and chief of police in that borough, who made the arrest about 2:15 o'clock Saturday morning at the Wise home, said Saturday that Wise has admitted stealing the two m-1 chines, both of which were found damaged along highways in southeastern Adams county Friday night and early Saturday morning. Wise escaped injury although one of the scars was almost completely wrecked. | Officer Roberts says that Wise, who had been a prisoner in the Adams county jail before on motor code violation charges, has confessed to the theft of the machines andhas signed pleas of guilty to thedouble accusation filed before Justice of the Peace Howard G. Bloch-er. Llttlestown. The first car theft which was reported to Hanover and state motor police was that of the machine of Ernest A. Wolf, Manchester R. 1, one of the proprietors of a photographing gallery at No. 12 York street, Hanover, taken from a Midway street about 8:45 o’clock. Later that car was found abandoned and damaged to the extent of about $45 along the Conewago- Chapel road, near Edge Grove. It had runoff the road on a curve and mounteda bank along the side of the road. The second car was that- of William Sherdel, McSherrystown, retired professional baseball player. Taken from in front of a home at Edge Grove between 11 and 11:30 o'clock, it was found later along the Hanover-Iittlestown road where it had struck an embankment, a tree and a fence when Wise drove it off a curve. A new sedan, the damage was estimated at about $300.Police have learned that both machines had been parked with the keys in the switch. It was the candy that Wise Is believed to have carried away from Wolf's car after it was abandoned that gave Officer Roberts his first opening wedge in Questioning Wise. The defendant had left some of the candy in the Sherdel car and had more in his coat pocket when he was picked up for questioning.Wise admitted to Officer Roberts Saturday at the jail that he took the Wolf car so he could “go for a ride” and after that car went out of service had taken the first parked car he came to that could be moved.Officer Roberts said his investigation revealed that Wise was alone when both machines were wrecked.i-r inifliTTPnm
