How in the world can a season-opening contest be termed that important?“I don’t think you can afford to lose home games in this league race,” said. LHS head coach Ted Juneau, whose squad meets 2-0 Shawnee Mission East at approximately 8 p.m. (following JV game) at the LHS gym.“There’s no doubt, if we want to win the league, we’ll have to beat East once this year. It would be nice to do it at home and take the pressure off us later. ’ ’Yes, Shawnee Mission East is considered one of the favorites to win the Sunflower League championship. East has already exploded to wins over Olathe South, 88-60, and Shawnee Mission Northwest, 74-48.“EAST WILL be very good,” said Juneau. “There’s no doubt they’re one of the top five teams in the state. In my mind they’re the second-best team in this part of the state (behind Wyandotte, LHS foe next Tuesday).“I’ve seen them play twice and I’ve come away impressed twice. They’re a very good shooting ballclub and they’ve got good size.”The Lancers boast 6-6 senior center Ken Glaser, who scored 30 points vs. South and 19 against Northwest. Lion junior Kevin Armitage, also 6-6, draws the assignment of stopping Glaser.“He likes to reverse direction with the ball and roll toward the middle for the easy layup,” said Armitage.Probable startersSM EAST (2*0)F—Brian Brown (6-6)F — Mark Logsdon (64)C —Ken Glaser (6-6)G—Jeff Ellfeldt (6-1)G- Bill Kelly (6-2)LAWRENCE (04)F—Fred Hunter (6-2) or Jan Demby (5-11)F —Eric Reed (64)C—Kevin Armitage (6-6)G —RobbZinn (6-3)G — Carlton Hamm (5-10)Tipoff: Approximately 8 p.m., at LHS gym. JV game 6:15.“I’m going to have to play behind him and jump right with him.”Glaser, however, isn’t the only East player who’s going to battle Armitage for rebounds.EAST STARTS forwards Brian Brown and Mark Logsdon, seniors who stand 6-6 and 6-4 respectively. That’s some height for the Lions to try and bottle up.“They post up well and get inside on you,” said Juneau. “The thing is, they’ve also got the outside threat in Kelly (Bill, 6-2 senior guard, who’s averaged 10 points per outing). The Lancers’ final starter — senior guard Jeff Ellfeldt, also stands tall atPerico, Wilhite to play in national putting meetLawrence golfers Berklie Perico and Brad Wilhite will be competing in the National Open Putting Championship meet Dec. 11-12 at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.The two golfers had advanced through sectional competition and will now compete in the 72-hole championship event.6-1. Lawrence will counter with Armitage, guards Carlton Hamm (5-10 senior) and Robb Zinn (6-3 junior); plus forward Eric Reed (6-4 senior) and either Fred Hunter (6-3 senior) or Jan Demby (5-10 senior).Senior forward Dane Griffin (6-3) had looked good in workouts, but has been weakened by the flu this week and it’s unknown how much he’ll be able to play. Not to worry, however. Juneau has lots of help available on his bench. “It looks like we might have some depth,” he said. “A couple of our juniors look like they’ll be ready to help us. I’ve been impressed with Chris Stephenson (6-6 junior). He’s worked hard in the summer and fall and has been a pleasant surprise.”Stephenson held his own against Armitage in last Thursday’s varsity-junior varsity scrimmage. In a game as close as the score indicates, the varsity prevailed, 58-54.“IN PRACTICE all last week and even last night, the varsity has kind of beaten up on the JV,” said Juneau. “In the game situation, they played real tight and that worried me.“They were tentative. I think maybe they were trying so hard to do things right, that they were not reacting. I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen since then.”Juneau’s hoping his team comes out ready to play Friday. A slow start could cost the Lions dearly.“They’ve had an advantage,” said Juneau of East. “This is their third game and the third time it’s been the opponents’ opener. They were ahead of Northwest 20-4 in the first quarter. After that, they played ’em fairly good. I hope we got all our jitters outlast week.”
