Kofa grapplers respond to week-long testingIt was the first real test of the young season for the Kofa Kings' wrestling squad. Forget the 3-0 record they hat! compiled. Forget that they had easily disposed of Calexico, 42-18, a couple days ago. The Chandler match would be the first rea/ test for the defending state champions.And they responded to the challenge. It even brought a smile to Dave Sampson's face. “I'm real pleased, they’re quite a group, Sampson said of his matmen. “We traveled, what, 471 miles in two days (prior to the Chandler match). Hut, I’ll tell you, the kids are tired.”After Robert Powell lost for the Kings at Mi pounds, the Kings rolled off six victories in the next seven matches — one ended in a tie. At 105 pounds, Scott Kottenbrook outpointed Albert Granillo 16-0; then Julio Gasca registered a pin; Craig Labistre won 12-9; Miguel Villareal won 12-3; Morris Johnson won 10-5; Scott Wilson tied 5-5; and Jim Fasley won 12-2.John Christiensen, 191 -pound class, was Kofa's last victor, a 7-5 decision over Dan Fletcher. It proved the clincher for the Kings grapplers who lost to Chandler a year ago.In their 42-18 victory over Calexico Thursday, Kofa received pins from Kottenbrook, Louie Garcia. TonyHadilla and Christiensen. Also recording wins for the Kings were Foster. Gasca, Labistre. Villarreal. Wilson and Fasley. Sampson had pointed to the Calexico match as a test for the Kings, who 24 hours earlier were in Tempe — 260 miles away — beating the Marcos de Niza Padres.When it rains, it pours and right now. the Kings are pouring it on the opposition.
