Johnstown Ties With 16-1 Burst In Last MinutesMoroz, Lewis,Carter Sparkle; Murphy Sets MorkB- RICHARD TVVIGGNews Sports WriterYielding 17 points in the final1 two and a half minutes while scoring only one during that same span, Frostburg State allowed Johnstown Campus to rally from a 16-point deficit but then breezed in a five-minute overtime to emerge with a 65-57 triumph last night on the Bobcats’ hardwood.Johnstown, down by a 56-40 score with 2:46 showing on the clock, suddenly began bucketing salvoes from inside, where previously Frostburg had laid down a blanket coverage. The Bobcats’ sizeable margin was cut to t,en ponts, 56-46, when Oscar Lewis .meshed Frosfburg’s lone tally in that final’minute-and-a-half, and then Johnstown retained ' its initiative' to score ten consecutive markers.With 47 seconds left in regulation time, the locals held a 57-53 advantage, and there were 30 seconds left when Bill O’Hara sank a ten-foot jump shot to pull the visitors to within two points. Another O’Hara jumper, from .almost the same spot as before, knotted the count with eleven seconds remaining and that’s how the fourth period ended. Coast In OvertimeThe Bobcats got the rebound from the tip-off-at the start of the overtime fray and Norm Hannels gave Frostburg the lead at the 3:50 mark with a layup. Kevin Murphy then bucketed three field goals, at the 2:36. and. 2:01 junctures, and George Moraz capped the scoring with a bucket at .the 1:20 mark.The contest was unique ill that Johnstown, a campus of the University of Pittsburgh, led Frostburg in field goals by a 21-16 margin, but the Bobcats sank 33 of 59 free throw at-temps to a 15-for-31 showing by the Pennsylvanians.Moraz, who sank 13 of 15 foul attempts, led Frostburg in scoring with 17 points, while teammates Oscar Lewis had 13 and A1 Carter netted ten points. Johnstown failed to place anybody in double figures, with Bill O’Hara and Bob Maddalow finishing with eight markers apiece.Kevin Murphy established a career sebring record for Frostburg State with his nine-point performance. Murphy, needing only one point to surpass the old mark of George Lauder, former Valley High School . standout, didn’t get any field goals but he meshed nine of 16 free throws to. give him a career total of 1,357 points.The victory marked the successful debut of Coach Kurt Wolfe’s Bobcats on their own floor, and was their fourth consecutive win. The Bobcats take their 5-1 ledger into their game at home on Friday against Madison College of Harrisonburg, Va.Inauspicious StartLast night’s contest began in-auspiciously enough with the two teams matching each other bucket - for - bucket throughout nearly the entire first half. Frostburg garnered a five-point lead on a bucket by Carter with 12:40 left in the opening half, 12-7, but when the half ended, Johnstown was on the top end of a 23-21 score.The first half was characterized mostly by Frostburg’s de-' fensive efforts which forced. Johnstown to fire most of their: shots from the outside. Carter, Murphy, Pietras and Moraz effectively prevented the Panthers from getting in close for the nearer shots.The Bobcats were ahead, 19 to 15, when Buddy Smith sank a tipin with 6:30 left. Maddalow's two free throws knotted the count at 19-all with five minutes remaining and field goals by Maddalow and O'Hara gave Johnstown a four-point spread.With 2:30 to go in the half, Oscar Lewis bucketed a short jumper and the first half ended with Johnstown ahead, 23-21.Steve Whitmore’s bucket 50 seconds into the final half against boosted Johnstown’s margin to four points, and four minutes into the half Rick Munday’s foul shot knotted the count at *29-29.With Ray Pietras, Carter and Lewis pacing the attack, Frostburg opened up a seven-point bulge, 42-35, with 7:19 remain-ing in the game. A jumper by Lewis made the score 46-38 with 5:10 to go. The Bobcats’ widest margin of the contest, 56-40, with 2:48 left to play, was attained on a pair of successful free throws by Murphy. Momentum ‘Stolen’It was at this point that the momentum was literally stolen by Johnstown. The visitors, suddenly making shots that were missed earlier, poured on the steam to score 17 points while Frostburg could manage only one, that one a free throw by Lewis.
