FOTJBTH DAY OF THE RACK:* M ♦; n J.HALE, THE IRISHMAN, KEEPSWELL IN' FRONT. .Major Taylor Making a Fine Showing. Lumsden Has a Bad Fall—Score at 10 o’Clock—Presidency of the Brooklyn Bicycle Club. Those who predicted that Hale could not last at the pace which he has been going in the six days’ race in Madison Square garden this week have so far proved themselves tb be false prophets. The long legged Irishman keeps up the gait steadily and is slowly but surely increasing his lead over the others. He seems to be in better condition than the others despite the terrific strain he has been under for four days. There was a rumor around the garden last night that ho had broken down. It was when he retired to take some much needed , rest. Ho remained in his tent for two hours; •r-but when he emerged he ate the best part of a' three pound piece of sirloin steak, washing Lt;. down wLth nearly a quart of chocolate. Ha then jumped on his wheel and renewed his. process of rolling up miles. While he wa3 resting the Irishman’s lead had been cut from fifty-one to twenty-six miles by Rice, the stocky rider from Wilkesbarre. He has the tenacity of a bulldog and keeps plugging away,.., although much troubled by swollen hands.,. Major Taylor is evidently doing his best and,t in some ways his performance is the most-wonderful of all. He is but 19 years of age--and has never taken part in any long distance.; riding before. Yet he is less than one hundred, miles behind the leader, who is the hero .of many such contests. There were two match races last night. One, between Lumsden, the Scotch champion, and Jay Eaton, the Elizabeth crack, resulted in a., catastrophe to the foreigner. He struck the,, rear wheel of the Jerseyman as the two were., rounding a curve, and was thrown clear-over:;the embankment into a box where a numberof people were, sitting. He was not seriously injured, but'was so badly shaken up that he could not continue the race. Teddy Goodman and A1 Weinig of Buffalo raced, best two, out of three mile beats, and the Riverside; crack won the rubber. The score of the race -at 1 o'clock this morning was as follows:Xame.Miles.
