WHL loo]WESTERN HOCKEY League commissioner Dev Dley has jet people know that the WHL is interested in expanding to Winnipeg. Dley has said publicly that the league will meet in January to discuss “interest from communities in B.C., Alberta and Winnipeg ”Only one problem with Winnipeg. There is no place to play. The International Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose has exclusive rights to Winnipeg Arena and the Moose would have no interest—and rightly so—in sharing their building with a competing franchise at the highest level of junior hockey. History has also shown that the WHL just doesn’t work at the Arena.Last night, Winnipeg businessman Jeff Thompson, who has, in the past, been interested in acquiring a WHL franchise, would neither confirm nor deny that he’s still interested. If Thompson were to bring a major junior team to town, he would, in all likelihood, have to build a 6,5007,500 seat arena. No doubt he could make tfcat happen, but not for two or three years, at best
