Dukes Honor Fall AthletesSenior quarterback John Bowers was named James Madison University’s most outstanding offensive player for the 1978 football season.Bowers was cited at a banquet Friday honoring JMU’s men’s fall athletic teams.In leading the Dukes to an 8-2 record, Bowers completed 88 of 174 passes for 1,169 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 130 yards and four touchdowns.Bowers established JMU single-game records for most passes completed (19), most yards passing (270) and most yards individual offense (302).The Hagerstown, Md. native also set JMU season marks for most yards passing, most pass completions (88) and most passes attempted (169). He set career records for most yards passing (2,074), most passes completed (162) and most passes attempted (327).Junior linebacker Dale Caparaso and senior end Ray Moore shared the most outstanding defensive player ♦award.Caparaso was the Dukes leading tackier this past season. He was in on 166 tackles, made23 unassisted and had seven quarterback sacks.Moore was in on 82 tackles, made 20 unassisted and had three quarterback sacks.Senior Hal Partenheimer was named JMU’s most outstanding offensive soccer player. Senior Rodney Allen received the team’s most outstanding defensive player award.Partenheimer, a threC-time all-state performer, led the Dukes in scoring this season with eight goals and two assists. He also received the Michael J. Frye Award which goes annually to the JMU soccer player who best exemplifies the personal characteristics of Frey, a former JMU soccer player.Allen scored two goals this season and was a Virginia Intercollegiate Soccer Association selection.Junior Richard Ferguson was named the cross country team’s most valuable runner for the second straight year.Ferguson, who finished seventh in the state meet, was JMU’s top finisher in every meet this season.
