The only loss the team has suffered thus far this season was the team's opener to Messiah. West Virginia also had a win streak of three games going into Monday night’s contest, but the Lady Braves helped the Mountaineers level off their record at 3-3.But the game was not all IUP. In fact, the Lady Braves did not take the lead until only 1:38 remained in the third quarter. That reprieve came ’ about on a 15-footer by Debbie Shearer from the corner, giving IUP a two-point, 58-56 lead. The first half of play was totally dominated by West Virginia. The Mountaineers’ divia Bradley had 10 points and six rebounds and teammate Cathy Parson connected for 13 of her game-high 28 points.“Cathy is one of the best players we’ll face all year,” said IUP head coach Carolyn Thompson. “She’s probably the best player in Division I, II or III.”Parson played a key role in the second half when the Lady Braves came out roaring and dosed the five-point deficit they suffered in the first half. She kept the Mountaineers in the game with some impressive aerial shots of 20 feet.“We knew at halftime that we had to play our game,” said West Virginia mentor Kittle Blakemore. “But we came right out and played their game. Our defense was shabby, and we just didn’t get the breaks. But that’s nottaking away from them. They’re a tough team and they just took it to us tonight.”West Virginia seemed to he holding off a scrappy IUP team when Bradley, a 6-1 freshman from Bradenton, Florida, went to the bench with four fouls. At that time, there was 8:53 remaining in the game and her teammates had a 64-60 advantage. But when she was forced into returning with 2:39 showing, the Mountaineers were at the short end of a 76-74 score. From that point on, the Lady Braves took total control. The Mountaineers were forced into chasing them around and fouling. The first mistake the women of WVU made was fouling Michelle Guin. The freshman from Arnold, Pa. simply went to the line and calmly sank both her freebies.“Michelle played a super game for us,” said Thompson's assistant, Lois Clark. “She showed a lot of composure for a freshman.”The second and most fatal mistake the Mountaineers made was picking on Julie Kibler* The junior showed tier up-perclass touch as she went to the charity stripe with only :23 remaining in the contest and connected on both of her shots for the winning points.“I went to the line and tried not to think about it,” Kibler said. I think that was the problem I was having before; 1 was thinking too much. Also, I thought about bending my knees. The coaches were telling me before that I should be bending my knees more,”Perhaps having the best game of her career and a big factor in the IUP win was junior guard Debbie Shearer. She finished the game with 23 points, connecting several times when it appeared the Lady Braves were running out of gas.Another player IUP relied on heavilywas Carol Hoover. The lone senior on the squad ended up with 22 points while only missing three shots all night. 1 The game was surprisingly won, however, on the boards. After being, dominated in the first half, IUP came out determined to take over. -''“Bradley is real good,” Kibler said, Commenting on the six-footer, “We were trying to get her fifth foul on her. We knew the only way we were going tp survive was to box her out.” Adriene Douglas showed IUP’s domination'as she lead all rebounders with 11. - :“This team has guts and we’ll nib a lot,” Thompson said. “They turned their backs on us and didn’t take us seriously.” The Lady Braves are for real as their record shows and don’t like to be taken lightly. The Mountaineers will attest to that. '.-IW.H VrfM —■ 11RAW* 3-0-4. fcwftrf M.11, Ctom 0-0-0, P*u* 13-2-2*..Ho«»« (MM). Truitt 5-2-12, M 4-1-9, AMft 4-2-19, T«W«3S-ll-*1•Rjp t4 .tm 3-2-*.
