BICYCLEFall Before Hale, Who is Still Fresh afcd Hopeful. .The Six Days’ Race at Madison Square Garden Will Develop Some New Pile-* '*•noins—Colored Man May Win.New York, Dec. 8.—The opening of the second twenty-four hours of the six-day bicycle contest at Madison Square Garden found the roll ofthe competitors sadly depleted. Of the original twenty-seven entries only sixteen remained, and it is good betting that less than half of this number will be in the race at the “finish. Hale, the Irishman, who had led yesterday afternoon and broken record after record, was fresh and hopeful of success this morning. He took a little nap during the early morning, but managed to add seventy-six miles to his credit between 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock. Experts at the Garden say, however, that he will not last the six days, albeit there was nothing in his appearance this morning to warrantthat assertion. Redding, the Nebraska man who broke all records yesterday for continuous riding, was within a score of miles of the Irish champion at 9 o’clock, but gave evidence of breaking up. It would surprise nobody to see “Major” Taylor, colored, capture first money. He was within thirty-miles of the leader at 9 o’clock and seemed as fresh as when he started. Maddox, of As-bury Park, was over 100 miles behind the leader this morning. Moore, of Philadelphia, is in much better condition than several of his competitors. Shock, the winner of the last six day contest, has disappointed his friends. His withdrawal will surprise no one. The chances of Glick, Gannon, Cassidy, Smith, Pierce, Ashingerand McLeod are slight. All the fifty-mile records have been broken and Shock \s record will doubtles be beaten by 200 miles. The score at 10 o’clock was as follows:Hale, 540 miles; Redding, 526; Moore, 524; Taylor, 543; Shock, 517; Asliinger, 499; Rice, 525; Pierce, 506; Forster, 518; Elkes, 456 ; Smith, 465 ; Maddox, 436 ; Gannon, 420; Cassidy, 423; McLeod, 455; Glick, 449.aW AM. ■ I
