By MARVIN McDONALDBrandon has delivered, as promised.Const rue Lion of the SporLsplex, the main facility to be used in staging the 1979 Canada Winter Games in the Wheat City, is complete.The grand opening will take place Dee. 22, at 8 p.m., following a brief tour of the other sites by officials from three levels of government — municipal, provincial and federal.The announcement was made at a press conference Tuesday by the Gamespublic relations co-ordinator Brian Boyle.It comes as a relief to officials, government and the 18 sports involved in the Games which will beheld Feb. 12-24. There was some concern over the delay in construction brought on by the four, month strike which halted work on the facility during the summer.Another concern was escalating costs.•'Including the three Summer Games, said Earl Dawson, regional representative for the federal government’s fitness and amateur sport branch, all seven Canada Games have cost each Canadian citizen five cents.Dawson said the federal government’s one-third share in defraying costs for the Brandon Games was about $8.5 million.The remaining two-thirds of the costs are shared by the province and municipality.The Sportsplex will be the site of racquetball, synchronized swimming, hockey, basketball and speedskating with badminton, boxing, curling, fencing, gymnastics, judo, table tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling being staged in existing facilities in Brandon. Alpine skiing wilt be held at Agassiz and cross-country skiing in I lie Brandon Hills. Other venues include the Keystone Centre, Brandon University, Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium, Crocus Plains School, Vincent Massey School, Neelin High School and the YMCA.Ticket go on sale Thursday and may be ordered at any Credit Union in the province.
