KW snaps its KCAC losing streakCoyotes defeat Friends, 68-62The nightmare is over for the Kansas Wesleyan basketball team.Coach Randy St. Clair's Coyotes shot clown the Friends Falcons 68-62 Wednesday nigh I at Sacred Heart gymnasium, shattering a string of 31 consecutive Kansas conference losses.It was 2 years ago this month on the same court that Wesleyan nudged the Falcons 94-90 in overtime.Then came 15 straight loop losses that season and 16 straight Inst year.But along came a young coach who played for some winning basketball teams at Wesleyan in years passed and ho promised, “The Coyotes are coming back.His Coyotes started slowly, losing to Ottawa but beating Baker in the KW Classic, then tumbling to College of Emporia and Nebraska Wesleyan in non-conference warmups.But it was evident it wasn’t the same old Wesleyan of the past 4 years out on the court.And the Coyotes proved it Wednesday as they built a 16 point lead at one time in the first half, and a 13-point advantage early in the 2nd half, only to watch it fade away to a Friends rally.But. unlike the past few years, the clubrefused to quit'. Clyde Murrell, who was to pace the Coyotes with 15 points, got 7 straight points during a span of 1 minute, 55 seconds, and put the club in front for keeps at 65-60 with 1:33 left,“I'm just proud of them, the Coyote skipper said after the game. “They showed what they're made of, they kept their poise. And everybody had a hand in the win.St. Clair used 10 men and all of them contributed points. Behind Murrell came Charles Green with 13 and Tracy Rielzkewith 12.Riet.zke's last 3 points came in the final minute to seal the decision after Friends had crept to within 65-62 with 1:21 remaining.Irving Johnson, a 6-6 junior who hasn't logged much playing time with the varsity, made a big contribution to the win with his work on the boards.Gary Jessamy's only basket of the game gave Wesleyan a 19-18 lead with 11:48 left in the first half and the Coyotes kept it through the first 11 minutes of the 2nd half.41-30 at halfAt one point in the front half, with KW ahead 27-24, the Coyotes scored 13 straight points to go ahead 40-24 and took a 41-30halftime advantage.Sheldon Woolery put Wesleyan ahead 43-30 to open the 2nd half and then the Falcons began to stage a comeback, led by Steve Allen, who was to score 22 points; Ralpheal Toney with 14 anti Bob Frischenmcyer with 12.Charlie Green gave Wesleyan breathing room with a basket and 2 free shots but Allen and Toney shot Friends ahead 48-45 with 8:41 left.Johnson's 2 free throws moved Wesleyan to the load again at 48-48 with 7:45 left, and Murrel hit the first of 5 fielders through the last 7l/a minutes to make it 51-48.Sam Burnett brought Friends back on top 58-56 with 4:20 left, and it was tied 58-58 and 60-60 before Murell’s quick points sealed it for KW.Wesleyan's junior varsity won 62-58.
