They were eliminated from the Southern Conference tournament last March by the East Carolina Pirates, and the ’Cats got revenge for that loss with a 100-80 shellacking of Tom Quinn’s Pirates last night atJohnston gym. Hanging on to a slender 49-48 lead at halftime, the Wildcats blasted the baskets for 51 points in the second half to win their first conference victory.It was a team victory, as six Wildcats scored in double figures. However, one Wildcat stood out, 6’5 junior John Falconi from New York City. Falconi scored 23 points, mostly on long 20 foot jumpers, added eight assists, and played an outstanding floor game. His back-court partner, Mike Sorrentino, added 14 points and also handed out eight assists.The first half was a torrid shooting duel between two excellent teams. The Pirates shot 78 per cent in the first half, while the ‘Cats hit 64 per cent. The Wildcats spurted to a 17-9 lead on the scoring of Falconi and Paul Wagner. Coach Terry Holland used a full court pressure defense, and this seemed to rattle East Carolina at first. But, led by the floor play of Statesville’s Ernie Pope, the Pirates came back to narrow the lead to 41-37. Although Pope only scored three points, hehanded out seven assists, and directed the Pirate offense.It was Davidson 49, ECU 42 with 2:39 to play in the half when Greg Dunn scored on a steal. But the Pirates scored the last six points of the half, and when Dave Franklin hit a layup, the Pirates were within one point.Anyone who saw the cold performance of the Wildcats against Clemson last week when they only hit 18 per cent and four field goals in the second half, might have wondered if it were the same second half team last night. The wildcats scored six straight points, a 22-foot jumper by Sorrentino, a layup by Gadaire on a feed from John Pecorak, and a jumper by Falconi to take a 55-48 lead. The Pirates got no closer the rest of the night, as the Wildcats out-scored their Southern Conference foe 32-16 at one stretch.Falconi, who scored 13 points in the first half, sparked this scoring spree with long jumpers, and nice feeds to 6-7 sophomore Larry Horowitz, who continues to impress for the Wildcats. With the score 71-64 in their favor, Holfand inserted big man Sheldon Parker for the first time, and his presence seemed to spark the Wildcats even further. He scored six points, stole the ball three times, and outrebounded 6’10 Pirate center A1 Faber, and with 2:47 remaining, the Cats had an 87-66 lead, and thePirates were beaten. It was a fitting climax to a team victory when sophomore guard Jim Lowry hit two fouls with 33seconds remaining to send the Wildcats to the century mark.Behind Falconi and Sorrentino, the Wildcats were led by Greg Dunn with 13 points, Steve Gadaire with 12, and Paul Wagner and Larry Horowitz each adding 10. Although Holland uses eight players equally, Dunn may well oust junior T. J. Pecorak from a starting berth. East Carolina was led by A1 Faber with 17 points, with Dave Franklin adding 15, and Nicky White and Roger Atkinson scoring 12. The ’Cats shot 39 for 64, a sizzling 60.7 percentage, while the Pirates hit29 of 50 for 58 per cent. The Davidson defense forced 37 East Carolina turnovers, which probably told the story of the Wildcat conquest.In the preliminary game, Jim Laranaga’s Wildkittens defeated the Cavaliers of Montreat Anderson, 96-78, to up their season record to 2-1. The Wildkittens were led by freshman Jay Powell of Youngstown, Ohio who hit 26 points. Ed Yeaton, the 6’8 freshman from Wisconsin added 20, and TomVerlin scored 14. The.Cavaliers were led by Stan Baker who tallied 26, and Alan Fairfax who hit 16.The Wildcats are now 3-0 on the season, and 1-0 in the Southern Conference. They put their unblemished record on theline Saturday night when they play the Princeton Tigers on the road.
