Jenkins Badly Battered in Cleveland Show%CLEVELAND —- (INS) — Ex-Lightweight Champion Lew Jenkins’ bid for a comeback was stopped cold today as Los Angeles' Jimmj' Doyle and Tami Mauriello, of New York, carted off victories in the feature events of the 20th annual Cleveland News Christmas fund boxing show In the Arena last night.Mauriello. one of the leading heavyweight contenders, scored by a knockout over Jerry Berthiaumc,of Montreal, after only two minutes and five seconds of the second rdtmd of their scheduled 10-rounder.But the devastating attack whichgave Doyle a TKO over Jenkins was the showpiece of the program. Doyle, classiest of all the lightweights except Ray Robinson, held the upper hand all the way. Only twice did the ring-rusty, 29-year-old Jenkins show the form which carried him to his division championship.As the fourth round endedJenkins was half blinded by four gashes near his left eye and another on his nose “I can’t see,” hegasped. Referee Jackie Davis refused to stop the fight, but Dr. Arthur F. Kagedorn, the Cleveland boxing commission physician, stepped in and ordered the proceedings to halt.Jack Dempsey, the old Manassa Mauler, officiated the Mauriello-Bertinaume sciap. Mauriello packed a 16-pound wegiht advantage, i Doyle held a seven-pound advantage over Jenkins.The program drew 13,000 customers who poured $71,000 into the News’ Christmas fund.Leroy Jackson won the judges’ decision over Leo Garrett in the all-Cleveland semi-final xVhi ch. went eight rounds. Irish Billy Walker, Portland, Ore., won from Augic Fleishour of New York m an 155-pound, six-round clash. Bobby la Fonde of Detroit outpointed Rudy Zadell in the six-round opener.
