Broncos name coachBOISE, Idaho (AP) — Boise State University officials announced Saturday that Dan Hawkins has been chosen as the new head football coach to replace Dirk Koetter, who said Friday he was accepting the head-coaching position at Arizona State University.Hawkins has been given a three-year contract, with his annual benefits package at approximately $150,000.Hawkins is the eighth head coach in the 33-year history of Bronco football. Boise State officials said he is familiar with the school’s program, having served as the assistant head coach, special teams and tight ends coach and the recruiting coordinator.During that time, Hawkins helped the Broncos to an overall record of 25-10 and two consecutive Big West Conference championships.Prior to joining Koetter at BoiseState in 1098, Hawkins was a successful head coach at Willamette University in Salem, Ore. He won 77 percent of his games over a live-year period, led Willamette to an overall record of 40-11-1 and a runner-up finish for the 1997 NAIA Division II National Championship. Following that season. Hawkins was named the District Five Coach of the Year, as well as earning his third straight league coach of the year.Hawkins has also spent time as both an offensive and defensive coordinator before taking over the head-coaching position at Willamette. In 1992, he was in charge of the Sonoma State University defense. And from 1988-91, Hawkins was the offensive coordinator at the College of the Siskiyous in California, helping lead the team to the Golden Valley Conference Championship in 1991,
