Organizers of Chess Olympiad in Tlirkey use Internet to build case for ’08 OlympicsBEGINNER'S CORNER87654321ah c df8 »BLACK HAS A CRUSHERHint: Find a lethal double threat.□ □ □A perennial winner, the Russian men’s team once again took gold at the recent 34th Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey. Finishing second and third were Germany and the Ukraine respectively. China won the women’s event, with Georgia in second and Russia in third. The victory by the Russian men was testimony to the vast love and support for chess that remains in Russia a decade after the dissolution of the Soviet state. Notably missing from the Russian team were Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik, whose world-title match overlapped the early stages of the Olympiad. For the Turkish organizers, the tournament - which featured 126 men’s teams and 86 women’s - was most important as an opportunity to reach out to the many non-Western countries in which a vibrant international chess community is nowdeveloping.Turkey is hopeful of hosting the 2(X)8 Olympic Games. It is likely that the Istanbul Chess Olympiad will be a positive step in that direction. An additional payoff will be the millions of Internet users expected to visit the Olympiad’s Web site, www.istanbulchessolympiad.com, during the next few years. It appears the Turkish sponsors were provident in grasping the potential of chess exposure on the Internet. Nicholas Negroponte, an MIT professor and author, stressed in a recent speech in Singapore the new technology’s vast potential, particularly in India and China.“Demographics of the Internet will change,” he said. “The dominant player on the Web will be the developing nations.”The surging interest in chess and an expected acceleration of broadband use in those countries should form a powerful synergy.Below is a game from Istanbul between Russian grandmaster Sergei Rublevsky and Carlo D’Amoreof Italy.RublevskyD’Amore1. e4g62. d4Bg73.
