Head coach Frank Esposito said the Titans played their worst game of the season at the wrong time.The summary came from Esposito, in his second year at the helm of the Titan footballIt was long gainers like a 77-yard punt return, a 28-yard Ken Ferguson to Tom Oczak TD pass and a 57-yard Ferguson to John Donatiello scoring aerial that shocked Titan rooters in the first halfrecovered by Lane at the The Indians then marched 63as the Indians piled up a 20-0Fenger 35, setting up the 28-yard scoring pass after Lane gained one first down and was penalized for clipping.A Robin Adams pass to Mike Davis for 16 yards after the kickoff was nullified when theyards on 10 plays, including the 11-yard spurt to pay dirt byFerguson.With the score now 26-0, Fenger launched a 48-yard drive that spluttered on the Lane 18. He added that LaneTech was “a fine team.”It was the second year in a row that Fenger went to Soldier Field to meet Lane for the title and the second year that the Titans have been th-The Titans stopped the Indians after kicking off to open the game, despite a 36-yard kickoff return by Ed Tankersley to Lane’s 41. After gaining nine yards in three tries, the Indians punted and Mike Morrie called for a fair36-yard aerial at the Lane 36. A fourth down pass was incomplete and Lane took over.Fenger’s Steve Bisping threw Ferguson for a five-yard loss, Ferguson ran for 10 but the Indians were forced tointerence penalty against Lane that meant 15 yards on a pass from Adams to Evans, an Evans to Adams pass for 12 and a scamper by Robert Adams of 13 yards. A tripping penalty made another Adams to Evans pass good at the 18.Lane then took the ball towarted. Last year it was 13-0.No one, including Lane’s coach, A1 Manasin, would ' have predicted the Indians would win by such a con-‘ vincing margin this year.Twice Fenger fumbled and twice Lane recovered.Lane literally exploded for five touchdowns, although the Indians had a first downmargin of only 11-10 over the Titans.catch on the Titan 16.Three successive first downs, aided by as many offside penalties against Lane, brought delight to Fenger fans. But, the drive stalled on the Titan 48 after an illegal procedure penalty.Morrie, not in his usual kicking form, punted to the Lane 23 where Charles Stevenson scooted 77 yards down the side line after faking a handoff to Ferguson.Morrie fumbled after returning 17 yards with thekickoff and the ball waspunt. After another Fenger putn from their own 39, Lane Tech’s Ferguson threw his 57-toyard scoinng Donatiello.passMorrie returned the kickoff 20 yards, Fenger failed to make a first down and the halfended with Lane on their own 42 with a third down and onetheir own 36 on three plays before Fenger’s Maurice Tolbert intercepted a pass at the Fenger 34. Evans moved the ball 12 yards on a draw play but again Fenger’s offensive machinery stalled.Bob Adams gained nine before quarterback Robin Adams faded to pass and was dumped for a 21-yard loss on second down and one. Harold Evans gained five before Don Nagala ripped his way 19 yards to the Lane 36.On the next play Evans fumbled and Lane recovered.another Morrie punt, Lane launched a 68-yard final scoring drive that all but ate up the clock.Fenger finished the campaign with a respectable 7-2 record with two ties. What about next year?Frank Esposito answered bluntly: “It’ll be a weak year. It’s going to be rough.”One glance at Fenger’s 1970 football roster will explain the coach’s outlook. The Titansthis season because of injuries. Nagala has made it and could be one of the league’s best next season.Two promising halfback speed merchants are Tony Cofield, only a freshman now, and ex-track man Johnwill lose 27 seniors from thisyear’s squad of 46 players. Only 19 are underclassmen.Tom Norgard, 5-9 sophomore, will undoubtedly have first crack at theTillman, a junior.At fullback Esposito will have Carl Cosby, a 185-pound sophomore now, and Todd Brown, a junior, to watch.He might try again to convert John Wheat, 6-2, 225 pounds, into a fullback.quarterback spot next season. He was impressive in spring drills and in pre-season practice.All he needs apparently iseame exnerience. He could beWheat played guard on offense and middle guard ondefense after early-season experimenting at fullback. End and safety Mauricewill hp h^rk1, 180-pound junior, and Vonzel Smith, 6-foot, 185 pound junior.Guards Andy Gbur, 185-pound junior; Fred Hedrich, 190-pound junior, and John Georgeopolous, 170-pound junior. Only returning center will be Harry Hullinger, 6-2, 190-pound junior.Coach Esposito will have tobe hurting at the end positions, on offense and defense. Of seven ends listed on the roster -- and they were a good group -- Walter Filkins, 195-poundjunior at 6-feet, is the onlyTitan who is not a senior.and the two Steves-Anderson and Sutherland.Gone from the center spot on offense and the middle guard and tackle, respectively, will be George Com-minos and Dave Bartak.Those two, along with senior backfield men like the AdamsGood BeginningEarly in the game a Lane Tech runner got path.
