Maybe he deserves the title. IBecause it would be necessary for him to feed a horse, if he owned one, not tomention the original Investment hr represented by the purchase price, Asher baa determined never to own such an animal.Hut the fact that he does not possess a horse doesn’t signify that Asher himself isn’t capable of doing the work of one He certainly Is.For a number of years now he has been hitching' himself to a small wagon and hauling loads that varied in weight from 1.000 to 1,3)0 pounds. And he says the work agrees with him.Hhod for Icy Weather.Asher was in a blacksmith shop near Fifteenth and Main street yesterday having a pair of horeshoes with ice calka on them made for himself. He was preparing for winter and Its icy weather and the resulting slippery pavements. The heavy iron shoes were nailed to the thick soles of his own shoes.Asher has no particular place that he can call home. Part of the time he lives in Joplin and the other part ho lives in a tent near Grand Falls on Shoal creek. There he raises hundreds of chickens. He works at odd Jobs in the city and in the evenings tramps the five long miles to his tent home, dragging his heavily loadedwagon with him.This peculiar man has a great many j funny ideas. For instance, he always c ir- ' riea an earthen jar filled with water in his wagon, together with food and extra clothing. For a long time he carried his j bedding with him. On the front of the i little vehicle he has a railroad lantern | lashed to his trappings. This serves as a headlight. j.V small lantern with a red silk hand- • kershief wrapped around it* globe does 1 duty as a warning signal when tied to the | hack of the wagon after dark.He’s Not Afraid of Street Car*. |Asher is forty-two years old and weighs 180 pounds. Despite his age, however, he is a powerful man, thanks to his constant though rather strenuous inode of living.He says it iR no effort at all to pull Ids wagon w*hen he has a thousand pounds of stuff in it.“Are you afraid of the cars when you get hitched up?” a friend aslred Asheryesterday.“No, he Raid, “I'm city broke; and besides, if I begin to feel ‘klttenis’ in the harness all T have to do is to pull up to . ®the curbing and unhitch myself.” 11Asher’s harness is complete in almost , (Me Itevery detail, except a bridle.
