EDDIE STERNHUS II CLAIMCan Justly Claim Some Cham pionship Boxing Honors“BATTLING” NELSON'S SUCCESS HELPS LOCAL BOXERLocal Roped Arena Enthusiast# Fixing Up Dope For LaPorte Fighter— Stern’s Victory Over Nelson a Year Ago Is Recalled by Last Night’s Fight.Today local lovers of the manly art of self defense are working overtime fixing up the dope of the roped arena whereby LaPorte’s clever boxer, Eddie Stern, will appear as a candidate for championship honors. Stern’s claim for top-notch honors is certainly well laid for not more than a year ago he secured the decision over Battling” Nelson, the fighting machine who Tuesday secured the decision over “Young” Corbett in San Francisco in a fight for the championship. So enthusiastic are Stern’s friends over the ability of the clever young man that already there is talk of negotiations for a meeting between him and Nelson. Stern’s friends place great stress on the local fighter’s ability to keep beyond Nelson’s firing line and at the same time peck away at the gamy champion.It is conceded that no boxer ever trained more faithfully than Stern. The young man has but one habit, that of boxing. He does not use tobacco in any form and never in his life tasted liquor. Throughout the period of his Residence in this city he has conducted himself as a gentleman and has won the respect of all who have become acquainted with him.The news of Tuesday fight between Corbett and Nelson was received by John Yorkey, William Smith and Robert Hardy. Many local boxing enthusiasts assembled to receive the returns by rounds. Considerable money changed hands as a result of the defeat of Corbett.
