KID McCOY DEFEATED.Corbett Knocked Him Out In Five Rounds Last Night(Special Dispatch to the Democrat.)New York, Aug, 31.—1The long-promised and long-iooked-for meeting between James J. Corbett and Charles (Kid) McCoy, under the auspicos of the Twentieth Century club, at Madison Square Garden, is over and in less than five rounds Corbett proved himself to be the better man. That Corbett and Me- j Coy are the cleverest exponents of the art of self defense among the present generation of the heavyweights, goes without saying. And keenest judges of the game who saw last night’s fight de-1 clare that it was the cleverest exhibition ever witnessed in, the j ring. Up to the moment that the , men stepped Into the squared circle opinions as to the irrespective ability 1 were widely divergent. Many • claimed, and rightly, too, that Corbett would prove to be the stronger as well as the cleverer, and it was through his superb feinting and heavy Blugging that he pub McCoy clown and out. McCoy:s friends all along have claimed that he was equally as dexterous with his hands, eyes and feet as the former champion, and in addition to this Lhey said that the Kid could hit harder than Corbett. All who have met McCoy acknowledge that his blows are powerful ones and that they sting and cut whenever they land. Last night, however, while McCoy landed some stinging Jabs, ho did not cub Corbett’s skin nor did he land a single heavy right hand blow during the contest. On the other hand Corbett, when he dropped science and begun to slug, landed hard rights and lefts which simply took McCoy’s guard away, and when Corbett found a vulnerable spot in the region of McCoy’s heart, two lefts, divided by a right, ended the battle. Both men entered the ring in superb condition.
