The Norwich Merchants arescheduled to play the Richfordentry in the Empire League Sunday at Veteran’s Park for thefourth time. The other games were rained out, except for the last one which was called due to the vandalism that damaged the shortstop and second base positions. The league standings have not changed because the contest between Greene and Cortland was rained out This means that Sunday’s games will decide thefate of the above mentioned teams. It was reported last week thatJim Downey and John Stewart were going to play. But because of the game being called off, Downey will not be able to play due to the fact he has returned to college. John Stewart, however, will still play as will Dave O’Neil, who has returned from his vacation in San Francisco. The return of Dave is most important not only because of his big . 365 average but because he is the only catcher on the team that has had any catching experience in league play this year.Cliff Stone will still be the starting pitcher if Vanderlipp’s arm is ailing. The teams are likely to be a little bit rusty as they have not played in three weeks but an all out battle is expected.Richford won the only other game earlier in the season by a 7 to 4 count and the Norwich team is hot for revenge as a loss knocks the Merchants out of the pennant picture. The offensive fireworks will be supplied by Jerry Parker who is leading the team with an .481average and is supported by Mike O’Neil’s .437 mark and Dave Petley’s .327. The rest of the team is capable of breaking .300 plateau. The Merchants will also play an exhibition game in Greene at the annual Labor Day extravaganza which begins early in the morning and ends with a giganticfireworks display. If a crowd packs the bleachers in Norwich as they do in Greene,By DAVE O’HARA Associated Press Sports Writer BROOKLINE, Mass (AP) — John New combe and TonyRoche, Australia’s newlycrowned U.S. National Doubles champions, are thinking about a pro tennis future, but they’re inno rush to join the play-for-payranks.Neweombe, 23, and Roche, 22, who began playing together as a team three years ago, captured the lone major title which had eluded them by defeating countrymen Bill Bowrey and Owen Davidson 6*8, 9-7, 6-3, 6-3 Tuesday in the windup of the 87th U.S. Doubles at Longwood. Before heading for the U.S. Singles Championships starting Thursday at Forest Hills, N.Y., Neweombe and Roche discussed pro possibilities in frank terms.“My thinking right now is not to turn pro for another year,’’ Neweombe said, “I’d like to1 Ithe Richford game could possibly lt;draw the largest crowd ever for lt;a baseball game in Norwich.
