By JIM REID Sun Managing Editor CAMP SHILO—Brandon's Don Carcary fired a one-under-par 71, here, Sunday, to set an amateur course record and capture the annual Camp Shilo golf cham pionship. He finished three strokes ahead of runner-up and Brandon Golf and Country club mate Gerry Zywina. Defending champion Bill Pid laski of Winnipeg carded a 78 in high winds Saturday to fin ish third in the championship flight. Carcary fired a two-over-par 38 on the front nine and then blazed around the second nine in a three-under-par 33, a nine hole record on this course. His card was. Par out 44 44 45—16 Carcary 454 435 544—38 Par in 444 434 445—36—72 Carcary 444 432 45—33—71 Carcary bogied the second, sixth and seventh on the front nine but carned a birdie putt on the ninth for his 38. On the back nine, he had seven pars but can ned a long iron shot on the 255- yard sixth hole after slicing his drive for an eagle two and came right back with a birdie three on the dog-leg seventh. Zywina, playing behind Car cary, was out in 39 and had a chance until midway through the back nine when a couple of bo gies in a row put him out of con tention for top prize. A record 288 golfers took part in the tournament. Bill Pidlaski and 116 others battled high winds on Saturday and scores soared. Only eight managed to better 90 on the opening day. Muggy weather greeted early Sunday golfers but by mid-aft ernoon skies cleared and late scores responded accordingly. Gerry Clark of Brandon and Grant Edgar of Winnipeg carded matching 79s to grab fourth and fifth spots in the championship flight. First flight winner was Tony Yacyshen of Brandon while Mike Spark and Roy Kepron of Win nipeg, and Ike Morgan and Matt Hrabarchuk of Brandon finished in the runner-up spots. Bill Adams, Jim Clark and Bob Cornell each fired an 87 but finished in that order on a countback in the second flight. Bob Malcolm of Shilo and J. Carlson of Shilo were fourth and fifth. Third flight winner was Dave Hooper of Shilo while Bill [les of Reston was second on a count back over Johnny Proctor of Brandon. Lorne Judd and Phil Hall, both of Brandon were fourth and fifth. Peter Derkach of Brandon won the fourth flight with H. Wal lace, W. Harris of Rivers, Gord Sorenson of Wawanesa and Flight Lieutenant Doug McQueen CJATC, picking up the other prizes. Fifth and final flight winner was A. W. Hay of MacGregor. Walter Bohonos, Larry Kenyon, G. Guichen and Don MacBeth, all of Brandon captured the other awards. ODDS AND ENDS—As usual the hospitality at this well-comb ed course was tremendous, Col. Hunt, the commandant who leaves today on a pre-retirement assignment, presented the prizes with the assistance of club pres ident Murt MacDonald .. . Golf club manager Bob Gillespie, Ray Wiens, Wid Seasons, Ray Lewis, Bob Willerton, Al Farewell, Dave Hooper, Sandy McBay, Bob Find lay got things rolling at the first tee and had club house facilities in top shape for the visitors And Bill Zapuchlak can take a big bow . . . as greenskeeper, he had the course in top condi tion and no one could fault the layout if they strayed over par here and there... . The gals of this club play a big role in the success of this tournament they run the hole-in-one, the perfume draw and the galloping golf. . . . Hole - in - one winners were Rod McMullen with first and third on Saturday with Roy Kepron second and on Sunday, they were, Gerry Clark, Frank Gudz and Lyle Macson Galloping golf winners were Doris McMullen and Gil Martin for Saturday and Mrs. Matt Hra barchuk and Mrs. Bery Simpson, both of Brandon for Sunday Although skies cleared in late afternoon, the last few foursomes didn't quite make it before dusk, proving only as Brandon's Clare Robinson starter in the annual one day on a nine-hole golf course. However, those that were left in the dark on Sunday had their money refunded and they prob ably wouldn't have complained anyway. . . . The hospitality of Camp Shilo was at its best and the annual tournament provided a fitting climax for the summer season . . . apart from the Country Club's annual Golf Leaf that is DON CARCARY new record
