20 THE WINNIPEG TRIBUNE, Thurs . Aug 30, 1062EDMONTON (CP)—An angry blast Wednesday was coupled with a suggestion of confusion “with grass hockey” over Canadian Amateur Hockey Association plans to train an all-star ice hockey team as Canada’s1964 Olympic entry at the University of British Columbia.Or. M. L. Van Vliet, director of the University of Alberta’s School of Physical Education, says the CAHA announcement backing the request of UBC coach Rev. David Bauer for sponsorship of the UBC-ba.sed team is “an absolute farce.”His comments are made in a letter to Dr. D. A. McLarty of the University of Western Ontario, president of the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union. An absolute farce says Alberta phys ed director of UBC choiceThe proposed team has been referred tafas a team of college all-stars but Art Potter, president of the CAHA said Wednesday it would not necessarily he made up entirely of university students.Dr. Van Vliet said in his letter:“What actually has been done is to agree to a Father Bauer all-star team representing Canada in the 1964 Olympic Games through a university that does not own a hockey rink, located in an area that has never produced a hockey player with a team that has never beaten anyone.“Surely someone must have confused this entire request with the grass hockey team.UBC fields good teams of Asiatics in this sport.”He adds:“One can only imagine the amazement of UBC people if Saskatchewan were to announce they were sponsoring a rugby team tour of Europe.”The CAHA last weekend approved Father Bauer’s proposal for a university team as Canada’s entry. He suggested players would be recruited from other provinces/Among those mentioned as possible recruits was Bobby Cox, player with the Memorial Cup finalists, Edmonton 0 i 1 Kings. Cox has been attending the University of Alberta. In his letter, Dr. Van Vliet said:“If the CAHA proposal is tomove a National Hockey League-sponsored St. Mike’s team to UBC for a two-year period with the idea that they will form the nucleus for a good hockey team why doesn’t the CAHA just say so . JjHe said the announcement of a university team representing Canada would be “a welcome and progressive step if it had even the smallest grain of authenticity and reality.”The Canadian Intercpilegiate Athletic Union was not consulted nor was any member institution.“It is a clear indication of the need for the Olympic Games committee and the British Empire Games committee to recognize the CIAU and provide them with rights equal to theAmateur Athletic Union of Canada and such groups as the CAHA in qualifying teams for international amateur competition.tiCopies of his letter were directed to Art Potter of Edmonton, president of the CAHA, and Jack Roxburgh of Simcoe, Ont., past president.Mr. Potter said it was incorrect to consider that this would be a university team.“The University of British Columbia will only be the base at which players will congregate and be trained,” he said. “The players will not necessarily all be university students nor will the team play in any university league.”Mr. Potter said, “We have been trying for years to get anational team and this appeared to us a good way to do it.”He said he believed that Father Bauer had discussed the proposal with universities across the country. Mr. Potter said CAHA officials had talked of the matter with the University of Montreal some months ago.“They were enthusiastic aboutthe idea and hoped that perhaps in a few years they would be the base at which players would congregate to build an Olympic team.”At Bayfield, Ont., where he is vacationing with his parents, Father Bauer said at first that he preferred to leave comments on Dr. Van Vlient’s remarks to Dr. Robert Osborne, head of the physical education department at the University of B.C.,and athletic director Bus Phillips. »But then he said his “whole idea and only intention was to get the CAHA to turn over Olympic participation eventually to the CIAU.”“i hope that the CIAU, now that it is a national body, will take it over for the 1968 games.”Of the reference to St. Michael’s, he added: “Some of the hoys I have talked to are St. Michael’s boys. Fellow-s like Tarry O'Malley, Dave Chambers and Barry MacKenzie. But 1 don’t w-ant them to be identified as St. Michael’s boysbut as bona fide students. Thev10are what I want—good players with hearts as big as mountains.”
