5T. LOUIS, AUGUST 30, 193lt;Allen W. BensonSAMSON, shorn of his luxurious locks, became a weakling, but It begins to look as if Clark Griffith, president of the Washington Nationals, either will have to curtail some of tho hirsute adornment of his bearded pitcher, Allen Benson, to keep his whiskers from getting in the way of his pitches, or give up the idea of bringing back spinach on the face to the majors. Benson, a former minor league hurler who has developed a hairy face since performing for tho House of David club, started twice for Washington and each time ho was knocked out of the box. Benson vowed when ho was signed by Washington that if he didn't win he would cut off his beard and try it with a mustache alone and maybe, on his next time,he will sec if a little less hair will turnthe trick.Benson is no novice to the pitching game, for, after hurling for Hurley High School in South Dakota and the Hurley town team, he worked three years for the House ofDavid club, then broke in. with Waterlooin 1027. Subsequently he was with Dallas, Akron. Charleroi. Minneapolis, Dcs Moines and Wilkes-Barre, his last connection being with Minneapolis last spring. The whiskered hurler Is a right-hander, standing six. feet one Inch and weighing 305 pounds and aside from the novelty of being the flrsl bearded pitcher to appear in the majors for years, is said to have a wide pitching repertoire that recommended him to Clark Griffith.
