Corle had three hits in the third game, as Healing Arts completed a sweep of the three-game series.(Photo by PaulBowen)Healing Arts won its fourth consecutive Bedford County Slow Pitch Softball League championship Sunday with a three-game sweep over Mickle’s.It was the second championship for the team under its current sponsorship (the first two were as Allison’s), and the first time in three years that the team did not enter the championships undefeated. It was also the first time in the four year run that Healing Arts was able to sweep the finals.A 10-run second inning brokeopen the first game, as Healing Arts went on to score a 17-4 romo. Richard ‘Muga’ Miller had a double and a three-run home run to do most of the damage in the inning. Chuck Corle and Larry Weyant each had two-run singles, and Doug Miller and Bobby Mickle also had RBI base hits.Larry Weyant belted a two-run homer in the third, Don “Meach” Miller had a two-run single in the fourth, and George Crist, Richard Ickes, and Doug Miller had consecutive RBI singles in theseventh.Mickle’s broke the shutout on a sacrifice fly by Mike Clark in the third, and received RBI hits from Mike and Jeff Hartman in the Bixth and Clark in the seventh.Chuck Corle and Richard Ickes each had three hits in the game for Healing Arts, and Meach Miller, Muga Miller, Doug Miller, Larry Weyant, Ken Corle, and Barry Weyant had two each. Brian Gennett, Buddy Brown, and Clark had two hits each forMickle's.Mickle’s came out of a marathon first inning with a 10-5 lead in the second game, but was unable to make it stand up.Singles by Meach and Muga Miller and Crist set the table for atwo-run double by Ickes, a two-run single by Doug Miller, and an RBI double by Larry Weyant in the top of the first.The first four Mickle’s batters eventually scored, one on an RBI single by Brian Claar and three on a homer by Mike Hartman. Buddy Brown knocked in a run with a triple, Bill Corrente, Tim Kestermont, and Dale Hartman had RBI singles, and Gennett a two-run triple. But after the first, a solo homer by Mike Hartman and an RBI fielder’s choice by Gennett were all Mickle’s couldadd to its total.Healing Arts wasted little time getting back in the game. In the second, Chuck Corle belted a two-run triple. Meach Miller followed with a single, and came all the way around to score when the ball was booted in the outfield. In the fifth, Barry Weyant drove in a run with an infield single, and three runners crossed the plate on a bases-loades single by Burkett that was kicked in the outfield. Chuck Corle singled to drive inBurkett.Healing Arts went on to add to its total in every inning. Ickes had an RBI single in the fourth, Meach Miller a two-run single and Muga Miller a three-run homer in the fifth, Burkett a two-run single in the sixth, and Crist a two-runhomer in the seventh.Burkett, Meach Miller, Muga Miller, and Ickes each had three hits for Healing Arts, and Gennett, Claar, and Kevin Lehman had three apiece for Mickle's.The third game turned into the Meach Miller show, as the Healing Arts pitcher bashed three consecutive triples and ended the day with a two-run homer.Healing Arts took a 2-0 lead into the third inning on an RBIsingle by Ickes in the first and asacrifice fly by Barry Weyant in the second. Mickle’s went up 5-2 in the third on singles by Clark, Kestermont, Dale Hartman, a walk to Mike Hartman, a two-run double by Jeff Hartman, and a two-run error.Miller’s second triple of the game highlighted a two-run third for Healing Arts. Miller knocked in Chuck Corle with the hit, and scored on Muga Miller’s sacrifice fly. An inning later HA tied the game on hits by Ken Corle, Mickle, and an error. Miller’s third triple started a six-run fifth inning. He scored on a second sacrifice fly by Muga Miller. Ickes, singled, and with two out Larry Weyant, John Defibaugh, singled, Ken Corle drove in two runs with a single, Barry Weyant pushed him across with a triple, and Mickle knocked in Weyant with a single.Healing Arts added some insurance in the sixth on a two-run homer by Meach Miller and a solo shot by Muga Muller.Mickle’s rallied for five in its last at-bat, led by RBI singles by Kestermont, Gennett, Claar, andMike Hartman.In addition to Meach Miller’s four hits, Ken Corle had three in the deciding game, and Clark had three for Mickle’s.Healing Aits swept Davidson's Excavating two straight in Saturday’s semifinals, but needed runs in the seventh inning in both games to do it.After dropping the first game, 7-5, Mickles stunned regular season champion Bedford Carpets with a 13-run first inning in the third, and Carpets was never able to regain the momentum.
