Royals win Cup despite Scottish tieKEN BRADSHAW Of The NewsSometimes a tie is as good as a win.Sunday that was the case as the Lethbridge Royals won the Challenge Cup by tying Edmonton Scottish 2-2 before 125 fans at Crescent Heights High School.The Royals won the Cup, emblematic of the Provincial Senior Men’s Soccer championship, on the strength of a better goals for and against record in the three-team tournament.Lethbridge defeated the host team from Medicine Hat, Top’s Pizza/ 4-1 on Saturday, while Edmonton edged the Hat squad 2-0 on Friday.The Royals won' the Cup with a makeshift lineup. Six of their players missed the tournament and the Royals played all three of their goal-tenders on the field for the three games; two of them playing new positions.In the other soccer finals on the weekend George’s Angels of Edmonton defeated Calgary Blizzard 3-0 to win the Ladies Finals Cup for the Provincial Senior Women’s title and Grande Prairie defeated the Ralston Rovers 4-1 to win the President’s Cup.In the Challenge Cup final the Scottish were down early as the quicker Royals controlled play and took advantage of a clearing mistake by a Scottish defender 10 minutes into the game to go up 1-0.Royals’ Derrick Malcolm took the misplayed ball between two Scottish defenders and fired a low right-footed shot past a diving Scottish goaltender.The Royals goal seemed to awaken the more experienced Scottish side as they came back to score five minutes after the Royals opening marker on a goal by Gordon Menzies.Scottish then began to carry the play to the Royals. Their persistent work finally paid off when Dertnis Latimer converted a penalty, giving the Edmonton side a 2-1 lead at the half.The second half proved to be a different story, though,. as the younger Royals took the play to the Scottish throughout the half.The Royals had a number of chances and finally tied the score midway through the second half as Willie Tietz scored after a corner kick.“We knew they were older than us so we weren’t con-, cerned when we were down 2-1 at the half,” said Royals coach Hugh Gilbert.Stevie Nunn of Lethbridge ^Royals closes in on* an Edmonton Scottish player trying to clear the ball from his own end during Challenge Cup final action Sunday at Crescent HeightsHigh School.
