Mr Crout. a history teacher, coached for several seasons, and Dr Her man. a local dentist, had also coached the teamWhat do you think our present-day coaches would think of a turnout of can didates shown In the above photo' There are only » players The squad really numbered 23 This was considered a good turnoutIn photos I've had with previous columns. the 1906 squad had 17 players and the 1910 squad had 14 players This year's squad at Adams Junior High seventh graders will probably have three or four times that number Protective equipment was limited I don't think the school had more than 15 blue and white Jerseys. Playing facilities were also very limited. Practice was held in Central Park Games were played inside the oval of the race track at the F.rie County Fairgrounds, now the site of McArthur Park on WPerkins Avenue There were no bleachers inside the oval so the crowd on the sidelines just following the players back and forth along the playing field The grandstand for the horse races was outsidr the oval, and was too far away for watching a football game The man at the far left in the photo is Weldon Heim, brother of William Heim, who was captain of the team Weldon played end on the 1906 Sandusky Athletic Club team, and was helping out as an ad visory coach In 19IH Harry Gayer was elected caption of the team, which was shown In the photo with the July 5. ISM column Gayer played his collegiate football at Kenyon College He was the All-Ohio center tn 1914(WiMmarher Is a retired Sanduskian
