Quarter son TakesAction InvitationalMERCER — Mercer Raceway's all-time top winner, Ralph Quarterson, made up for a frustrating season Wednesday when he drove to victory in the annual August Action Invitational for Modifieds. Quarterson picked up $2,000.Also shaking off the bad luck that has dogged him all season long was Bob McCann who took home $500 for his victory in the Semi-late feature.Deek Scott started on the outside pole and out gunned Jack Sodeman to take the lead at the start. The first five laps were plagued with many restarts ana each time Scott was able-to hold off his rivals.Quarterson moved past Andy Lutz for second on the seventh lap but Scott continued to pull away from the field until another yellow came out on the 23rd lap for Doug Feil.At that point the top 10 were Scott, Quarterson, Lutz, Dick Rankin, Lou Blaney, Ted Wise, Bob Wearing, Buddy Cochran, Dick Swartzlander and Ralph McBride.Only a couple more laps got in the record books before a five car pile-up on the fourth turn brought a halt to the action. Swartzlander, McBride, Feil, Jack Pears and Tommy Kristyak were all involved with Pears being knocked unconscious.After Pears was taken to the hospital the green came out w ith Scott again leading Quarterson.Rankin and Blaney. Just when it looked like Scott was on the way to his biggest career victory, he suffered a flat tire and came to a halt on the front straight.After Scott was towed off, the field didn't even get in a lap before another tangle in the fourth turn area left DaveMurdick upside down. At this point the red flag was put out to clean up the tangle and allow the drivers to add fuel due to the many caution laps. This also allowed Scott to change his tire and start on the rear without losing a lap.When the green came out again on the 34th lap, it was Quarterson over Rankin, Blaney and Ted Wise.Quarterson had little trouble holding the lead the remaining laps with Rankin and Blanev holding their positions till the uiecKereu new. wise dropped out during the final laps giving fourth to Buddy Cochran while Scott was able to salvage fifth. Rounding out the tOD 10 were Tommy Jarrett, Dick Swartzlander, Mike Sutton, Scott Gurdak and Raplh McBride.Tom Phillips led the first 16 laps of the Semi-late race before his rear end went out giving the lead to Banker Beach who held off Bob McCann until he went wide on the 4th turn of the 23rd lap and had to settle for second. Following were Lou Gentile, Donnie Allison and Tom Williamson.
