C. C., The Bar Harbor Police, the Bar Harbor Fire Department, The Seal Harbor Swimming Club, The Northeast Harbor Swimming Clhb, The Northeast Harbor Neighborhood House, Troop 89, and 91 B. S. A., The Acadia National Park, and the Mt. Desert Island Hospital.Three demonstrations were given, two at the Y. M. C. A. al 10:30 A. M. and 4:00 P. M. and one at the Mt. Desert Island Hospital for the benefit of the doctorsand nurses at 11:30 A. M. Commodore Longfellow said that ol the 20,000 drowning accidents inthe United States each year, 15,-000 persons lost their lives largely through lack of knowledge of the Schaffer method of resuscitation and the simple approaches, holds and carries that any competent swimmer can learn. He emphasized the need in every community of supervised swimming facilities and said that the most accidents take place among boys 14 to 19 years of age, and the next among men 40 years and over. He urged that every community“waterproof” it’s young people before the age of 14 by giving them competent swimming and life saving instructions. Together with Chief of Police Abbott and Editor Darling of The Bar Harbor TIMES Commodore Longfellowvisited the scene of the recentdrowning accident at Thunder Hole and discussed the prevention of such accidents.Lieutenant D’Arey and Educational Director Ober of the Eagle Lake Camp had sixteen men take the instruction given at the Y pool.
