The double daily drills will continue for two weeks and then Jones will taper off his squad for the Sept. 19 home night opener against Eastern Illinois.Turning to baseball, Manager Danny Murtaugh of the Pittsburgh Pirates tried an experiment last night at Columbus, Ohio, in a game with the International League All-Stars that might be an insight of what other National League clubs can expect from the Bucs in the last month of the red-hot pennant race.At the start of the season the1 Pirates had three first basemen — Ted Kluszewski, Dick Stuart and Rocky Nelson. None of the trio had any experience of playing in the outfield. As a result, Murtaugh alternated the first base job between the three with Stuart and Nelsongetting an opportunity to play of tener than Big Klu.Earlier this week the Pirates traded Big Klu to the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Harry Suitcase” Simpson and a Minor League player. This move still left Murtaugh with two first sackers and last night he started Nelson at first and inserted Dick Stuart into left field in an effort to get both of his long-ball hitters in the lineup.How did the experiment pay off? Nelson slammed a three-run homer and a single while Dick Stuart had at least a single. Whether Murtaugh goes with this lineup, of course, remains to be seen. The Pirate manager also tried second baseman Bill Mazeroski at third base for a spell last night.The Bucs, in case you haven’tnoticed, have been making it rough on National League contenders in recent w’eeks.
