A SPLENDID TO U UN AM ENT.iwn.The first annual tournament cf the West Okoboji Golf and Country club, \yas held Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 25-26, on the links on the west shore of West Okoboji lake.The days were ideal, and the course in excellent shape. Teams were sent from the Storm Lake Country Club, the Sioux City Country Club, the Storm Lake Country Club and Minnehaha Country Club, of Sioux Falls, and a team from the local club:Eighteen players entered the tournament as individuals outside the teams representing clubs from Grinnell, Des Moines, Clarion, Omaha, Canton, S.D., Nashville, Tenn., Carroll, Hartley, Spencer-, Milford, Sioux City and Primghar. The Sioux City team won the team championship, with West Okoboji nine points behind.Eight men qualified in the match Monday morning, at nine o'clock. The eight to survive and their scores for eighteen holes were:Knepper, Sioux City, .....73Beck, Sioux City,...............81Coleman, Hartley,..............77Francis Dickinson, Des Moines. .76Foster, Storm Lake.............83Minchen, Carroll, .........81Linton, Nashville, Tenn.,........84Warren Dickinson, Des Moines. .77 Van der Aarde, of Milford, was just out of the runnmg with an 85, and Williams, of Milford, had an 87.The championship flight was held ‘n the afternoon. Knepper drew Minchen and won 5 up. W. Cornish Beck iefeated Warren Dickinson 1 up. Cole--u.an won from Foster 2 up. Tracy, of Storm Lake defeated John Tuthill, ofSioux Palls,Thursday wcs another beautifulday Tbe crowd gathered early and in thechampionship flight Francis Dickinson drew Coleman and won 2 up. Knep- ' ner won from Cornish Beck 4 up. This left Dickinson and Fred Knepper two of the best young players in Iowa, to fight it out for the big silver cup. and the honors of the. tournament. ' They started at 2 o'clock in the afternoon and it was a game worth seeing. Dickinson got away to a bad start and at the fourth tee was two down, but he never flinched and both boys played like veterans. They were tied at the fifteenth hole, but Knepper got in the rough on his-drive and lost the hole. His drive was not as good as it should be on the seventeenth and he lost that also, giving the match to Dickinson, 2 up and one to play. The playing was steady, but while Dickinson drove and used his irons much better than Knepper, yet Knepper’s nutting was sensational. In the morning contest with Coleman Dickinson turned in the phenominal score of 67 for eighteen holes. Knepper won the cup for the best score made in the qualifying flight on Monday with a73.In the first consolation flight Monday afternoon Hoffman defeated Mc-Murry, 3 up. Wagner won fiom Tracy, 4 up. In the next match Wagner, who is a young fellow and a most | promising player, defeated Hoffman, winning the flight. He received a beautiful cup. In the second consolation flight Leonard Heldridge, fifteen year old son of F. A. Heldridge, of Milford, won from White, of Spencer,2 up. Anderson defaulted and he drew ;. Broders, of Hartley and won the flight 4 up. He is the only Milford player to win a prize—a fine caddy bag. He gives promise of being a real player and was the youngest player in the tournament,Everybody went home feeling that they had enjoyed two splendid days on a splendid course and the tournament to be held next year will draw a much bigger crowd and more good players. The tournament this year was 5r.the line of advertising, letting players know that the West Okoboji Golf and Sountry Club has one of the nicest grounds in the state, located at the lakes, “the play-ground of Iowa.” It will be more popular as years go by.Credit for the fine condition of the grounds are due to the good work of, of} Caretaker Jack Stanley, who ha*lthe, Iami i ake ■ lar-t R. ears sold jerything in first-class order. Birney, of this city, purchased the Watson property on Lincoln street just east of the Breas . furniture store, and will occupy the 'ton ; same about the first of September 1 is • with a complete new hospital.
