Meeaon, 2, Ploomfieil-cott ges, Alma-road, ponder* Sod.A BIRD’S-EYE VIEW OF THE HOTSPUNaturally all lovers of the “socker” pastime are fully alive to the fact that the football seaso of *1897-8 commences on Wednesday, Sept. let Never in the history of the Tottenham Hotspu Club has the outlook appeared so promising, one may judge by the form shown in practice the new men, who one and all appear to splendid exponents of the dribbling code. Thestrong point in the Spurs’ ranks this season willundoubtedly lie in their halves—Stormont, Jones arid Hall—who will receive valuable assistance from our old favourite Harry Crump. Black andJoyce will be a left wing to be proud of, withHartley, who appears a very deadly shot, and Meade, the old Arsenal player. There should be no difficulty to find a centre forward, as both men are showing up well. Tannarhill and Davidson make a pretty and most effective right wing. Everybody speaks highly of Kn o wles, the righ t back; his partner, Montgomery, we all know, and the ever - smiling Monty appears to have improved. Cullen pleases the critics in goal, showing marked ability in that most difficult of all positions. Beside those mentioned they have Ambler, Clements, Ernie Payne, and Allen. Everyone will be sorry to hear of the illness of Allen, who is laid up with typhoidfever. If Mr. Charles McGahey turns out—and there appears not the slightest doubt that he will— to him will be offered the captaincy. There is no doubt that McGahey in form is one of the best, if not the best amateur backs in the south, and will make a very popular captain. The Executive have made numerous alterations to the ground, all for the comfort of their patrons. They open their season next - Thursday with Gloasop North End, at Northumberland Park, with the following team to represent the Spurs :—Joe Cullen (Celtic goal), J. Knowles (Sunderland right back), Montgomery* (left back), A. Hall (Dundee right half), W, Stormont (Dundee and Preston North End left half), J. Jones (Sheffield United centre half), Tannerhill (Bolton Wanderers outside right), Davidson (Burnley inside right), J. Hartley (Dumbarton centre forward), David Black (Wolverhampton Wanderers outside left), and Joyce (Bolton Wanderers inside left). Before finishing, the Spurs have entered for the United League and Southern League, also English Cup. We shall fully expect to see our Tottenham representatives well up in both Leagues, we must not be too sanguine, for there are a great many ups and downs in all kinds of sport ; still, with suchstrong talent at their command we may expect a brave show by the Northumberland Park contingent. May they bring home either the Southern or United League championship.A SPUR.
