He was presented a felt award at the school’s all-sports banquetthat spring in recognition of hisservice to the school.It was the same award which was presented to seniors who had earned several varsity letters. It was a fitting award, since in a sense he was “graduating’’ from the high school too.Charles McAfee, who served in the dual capacity of athletic director and basketball coach at the time, made the presentation “We will always begrateful,” he noted. The “we” was truly a collective one, spoken on behalf of everyone at the school.With the move to Middleport came a new loyalty — MeigsHigh School had just been formed by the consolidation of Pomeroy. Middleport andRutland.Although students still attended separate buildings llicti year, the district was combined in several ways, including athletic teams and the bandWith the other freshmen who were coming into the districtthat year was a newcomer from the north — Dale Swift. He picked up with the Meigs athletic teams where he had left off with Athens. The loyalty quickly was built at his new school, but old friends from Athens were not forgotten.One person here, learning of his death Wednesday, admitted he didn t even know Dale s last name “He was always so friendly, even after he moved to Middleport. He would always come over to speak whenever Athens met Meigs.”Sympathy is extended to hismother, Mrs. Hattie Swift, and other members of his family.
