A Tough GrindRookie quarterback James EarlWright of the Edmonton Eskimos Is finished for the season. In fact, his football career may be ended.Wright, a Magnolia state native from Columbus, first made gridiron headlines when he led the Memphis State Tigers out of obscurity a few years back as a freshman field general.In his senior year at Memphis State he did an outstanding job of directing his team against Ole Miss, but then suffered a leg injury and was out for the remainder of the campaign.Red McMahon, president of the Canadian Football League, said over the weekend that Wright received torn ligaments in his right knee in a game against Torontoat Edmonton last week.Wright has already returned to Memphis where he he is scheduledto undergo surgery on his injuredknee.Although McMahon said the clubis optimistic about Wright s chances of recovering, we're a little on the skeptical side. If he does, he certainly won't be able to play this season.It was Wright's other knee that was injured during his senior year at Memphis State.Edmonton officials report the Columbus native has a three-year, no-cut contract with the Eskimos. He was signed by the club last vear but didn’t play because they didn't want to take a chance on him reinjuriiTg’ that left knee.Louis Guy of McComb, the ex-Ole Miss * speedster, has been placed on the disabled list by the New York Giants and it may be quite a while before he is stored to the active list.Guv, playing at a defensive halfback post for the Giants in an exhibition contest last week, suffered some tom shoulder muscles.Pro football is a rugged game.
