He passed veteran Ernie Derr, another Keokuk driver in his second full year of running with USAC. on the 86th lap in front of the grandstand.A tricky move by Stott set up his third and final pass. Derr got by Stott on the 81st lap on a restart. Derr held the lead for only five laps. But. in the words of Stott himself. “...I knew that all I had to do was pass him to get the lead back . ”Derr pitted just before the yellow came out. He took fuel on lap 70. Stott waited it out. It paid off on lap 74 when the yellow came out for Jigger Sirois. who put his 1974 Charger on the wall between the third and fourth turns.Stott stayed on the track for a couple of laps and then decided to pit. As the pace car car picked up the racers. Stott was right behind the pace car. but he decided on another move.Stott came in and took on fuel and t vo right tires. When he rejoined the field he was at the back, just behind Derr.“Just like I said.
