Sports HappeningsBy CHARLEY CROSBYThe Norwich Merchants will try once again to play the Empire State League leading Richford entry this coming Sunday. This will be the third attempt to play the game which has become, through the help of the rest ofthe league, Norwich’s last chanceto win the league championship in its first season in the loop.The merchants are led at the plate by Jerry Parker with an average of .481. The O'Neil brothers, Mike and Dave, are hitting .437 and .365 respect-ively and the old ranger, DavePetley, is showing the youngstersthat an older man can play the game by putting his whole souland body, including enthusiasm, together.For his all out effort Dave ishitting .327 and plays right field like he knew where every blade of grass was sown.The defense will have to be at its best as Richford boasts some of the top hitters in the league and their pitching staff is just as good or they would not be in first place.The Merchants have come up with Cliff Stone one of the best pitchers in the circuit due to his impressive hurling against a surprising Owego team.The two additions, Jim Downey and John Stewart, will lend their services to the team to help plug the porous defense.In some of the top sports developements over the past seven days Gary Oliver of Oxford won the New York State Junior Elks golf championship at Malone with a score of 80 which was two strokes off the senior winners total of 78.Harry Oliver, father of the junior Elks winner, captained a team which placed first in the Blue Stone Classic league tourney and also at the same golf course, Bill Branhann won the club championship with a 36holetotal of 151.Gary Hoffman, Mount Upton,won the Sidney Motorcycle club’s Cycle Poker Run over a 74 mile course.In last weekend’s Age Group Development swimming meet which was held at Oneonta State Norwich came out with three wins.Pete Heotis won two of these events with his best time of 56.5 coming in the 100 yard freestyle. He also won the butterfly race.Christene Echentile. daughterof the NHS swimming coach,George Eehentitle placed first in her speciality,'the 50 yardbutterfly.The summer s last competition for the Elks Aquatic Club will be tomorrow in Colonie, This will be the Adirondack. District Swimming and Diving champion, ships.Bill Smith’s Raiders won thesummer recreational flag foot-ball championship with an un.defeated record of four wins and no defeats.John Maxiam at quarterbackand Tom Brereton at end suppliedmost of the offensive with their pitch and catch routine.This league was under the dir-ectionship of Tom Sawyer.The Norwich High School football team with new head coach Walt Shonosky started practice this week with alout 44 players in attendance. A pre-season report will be made soon on the prospects for this coming year which will start Sept. 16 with a new team on the schedule, UticaFree Academy.The 1967-68 bowling season is almost upon us. There have been many organizational meetings with more to come. On the open, ing night at the Norwich Bowling Center, Bob Thomas was giving himself a chance to warmup. His warmup consisted of three games in which he felt that he was having trouble with the six pin. His three game total was 681, That’s a troubled start to say the least.The majority of the leagues are slated to get underway after Labor Day.There will be no bowling sup-plement this year so in order to give the same coverage in the Norwich Evening Sun, the league secretaries will have to get their standings into the Sun office on Lakcawanna Avenue the following morning tefore 10:30 if the standings are to be published.The St. Louis Cardinals are making a runaway of the National League pennant race largely due to last seasons trade that brought Orlando Cepeda to the Redbirds from the Giants and the acquise-tion of Roger Maris from the Yankees.The redhot scramble in the American League between Minnesota. Chicago, Boston, Calif-ornia, and Detroit will soon, I predict, have a team that will gradually pull away from the rest of the contenders and win the pennant by five games. I will not however, give my opinion on who the lucky team will be.Bob Van Tine, ex Norwich Sun sports editor was in town recently visiting his family while on vacation.
