FAST BALL GAME HERE THURSDAYHampton to Play Negroes on Watermelon DayFor the first time in many years Jefferson fans will have an opportunity to see a couple of the state’s most outstanding semi-pro teams In action on the local diamond, the event to be a feature of the Watermelon Day celebration here next Thusrday, Sept 1.Negro Team LikelyDan Shaw, acting for the Junior Chamber of Commerce, is to be congratulated upon securing the Hampton Pirates, who will likely be opposed by the famous colored team known as Gilkerson’s Chicago Union Giants. Mr. Shaw has made a contract with the Hampton manager to bring his team here next Thursday, while negotiations for the other club are pending If the Chicago Negroes cannot be secured, an effort will be made to get the be-whiskered House of David team, the Kansas City Monarchs or Oklahoma Indians. A dozen or more of the best semi-pro clubs in the country will gather in Council Bluffs tomorrow for the big southwestern Iowa tournament and it is a certainty that Mr. Shaw will be able to select an opponent for Hampton that will prove a drawing card.Hampton is considered one of the strongest teams entered at Council Bluffs. Their lineup includes Art Rinehart, former pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, Virgil David, left handed pitcher at Iowa University who was with the New York Yankees, Bud Knox, Western league catcher and outfielder; in addition to several players out of the Mississippi Valley league and two colored stars who formerly played with the Chicago Union Giants. They have defeated a number of the best clubs on the road this season and have loaded up especially for the Council Bluffs tournament.The game will be played at the fair grounds diamond starting at 2 30 in the afternoon. The price of admission will be 35 cents.
