Aggregation; Myers Limits Losers to Six HitsThe Hub, member of the city No. 1 league during the 1939 season, captured the city softball championship Wednesday night by defeating the Bombers, a Central Recreation Center club, 7 to 2, in the finals of the second annual city tournament before 2,500 fans at Belleview park. It was one of the largest crowds ever to witness a softball contest at the hilltop recreation center.The Hub succeeds the Cosmo club as city champions. Cosmos winning the first annual city tournament last year. The tourney was sjiinsored by the recreation department, under the direction of Frank Y. Linton. ......As the new champions, the Hub team will receive the H. W. Birrell three-year trophy and minature individual gold softballs. As runners-up. the Bombers will also be awarded miniature balls.Last night was the second tinie^ ------------------------------ --that the Hub and the Bombershad attempted to settle the city championship, their first meeting last Friday ending in a 4 to 4 deadlock, being called at the end of seven innings because of darkness. Ofte big inning proved to be the deciding factor in Wednesday’s ball game^ The Hub scoring five times in the first half of the fifth frame to sew up the contest.The Bombers got off to a one-run lead in the Opening inning, the tally being of the gift nature as the result of some loose defensive play by the Hub. McGowan flied to Griffin for the first out but Albritten rifled a single past Paddock. Smith grounded to McVey, who tagged Albritten on the line but threw wildly to first in an attempt for a double play. Smith moving to second on the error. With Hill at bat. Smith went to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a passed ball by Johns. Hill banged a single to center but Wilson went out, McVey to Dever.The Hub tied it up in the third as McVey opened with a double to right field, Albritten just missing the catch after a long run, Griffin lined to Albritten and Johns flied to West for the second out. Myers then slapped a line single to right, scoring McVey.with the tying run. Dever popped to McGee jto end the inning.Hub Goes Aheadtrips to the plate, to his own team’s cause, knocking in two runs. Joe Gogul and Jim Paddock also batted in two tallies each. In the fourth the Hub went ahead, never to be headed, Albritten dropped Gogul’s fly in short left field and the batter raced to second on the error. Paddock was out, McGee to Wilson, and Hamilton went down the same way, Gogul racing to third, Messerly scored Gogul with a base hit and Knowles was the final out, S, Albritten to Wilson.McVey reached first on S. Al-britten’s error to start the Hub’s big fifth inning. Griffin’s grounder was picked up by C. Albritten, who threw to second trying to get McVey, but the throw was late and both runners were safe. Johns singled 16 deep short, filling the bases, Myers* high fly dropped safely in right field for a single, McVey scoring, Gogul sent Griffin and Johns home with a two-base wallop. Paddock singled to right. Myers scoring and when Smith’s throw got past McGee, Gogul scored with the fifth run of the inning, Hamilton and Messerlythen went down on fly balls toend the uprising.The Bombers started a little trouble after two were out in fheir half of the sixth. Paddock threw out Wiggins and McVey tossed out West, before S. Albritten reached first when Messerly *s throw pulled Dever off the bag. McGowan singled over short and when the ball got past Griffin, S.Albritten scored and McGowan raced to third.
