1943 copper pennies and Indian team photos are truly rare findsBy RANDY FARRSun Sports WriterThis week’s sports-sec!ion ad picture features the 1943 Grand Saline Indians.Back then, the Great Depression worked its way right down to the penny. But as is clear from the names of these players, it was quite a character building time. They had just one football coach, who was also the principal of the high school. They didn't even have a full schedule of games due to something called gas rationing. These Indians didn't have-physical therapy doctors--ifsomething hurt and it wasn’t broke, it didn’t need fixing. They were tough as leather--which is about all they had for padding.Now. if asked today about the knee replacements and the arthritis--that's just getting older stuff! But that’s another story.Seriously, a number of these Indians can be seen in and around Grand Saline. These men were instrumental in continuing the football program when it wasn't easy to do so. What a fine legacy they have left behind them! The following are the 1943Grand Saline Indians: (Standing) The only football coach the team had-and also the principal of the high school. James F.
