Palmer and Nicklaus defeated Nelson and McSpaden, 1-up, in a similar exhibition last year.frmttWorkat MunyslowsBy CLAIR GOODWIN News Herald Sports EditorMajor renovation work at Schifferdecker Municipal golf course has proceeded rather slowly this summer, but it is expected to pick up considerably once the “golf rush” subsides.The short range improvement project, which is being financed through surplus from the course, involves construction of sevennew greens, relocation of tee boxes and fairways, and installation of water lines.Don Dickson, course superintendent, said water lines to the proposed new greens have been completed and the next step will be construction of the greens.“It will go pretty fast after weg e t started,” Dickson commented. He indicated that actual construction might start within the next month if the golf traffic slows.“Don has fallen a little behind schedule,” Harold Kirk, professional at Schifferdecker. said,“because he had to work on the regular greens quite a bit this summer, taking him and his crew away from the new work.”Currently Dickson is having dirt transferred from the airport area to the course for the new greens. Other materials, such as sand, gravel and peat moss, have been ordered.He won’t attempt to estimate when the project will be completed, but city officials earlier had indicated the target date would probably be this fall.Once the new greens are finished, the layout of the course will be changed overnight to eliminate trouble areas. The changeover also will lengthen thecourse from 5,800 yards to about 6,400.Additional work on the greens is being considered for next year and several probably will be reconstructed.
