Sportangles-By G uestsGuests columnists arc filling the Sportangler Chair for two weeks. Today's column is written by KenwH Oberg, president of the Oarey Park Men’s Golf association.Every day or so you read where someone, under great mental or physical duress, does something to keep their word or fulfill a promise. Well, that’s me! Writing a column for Fred was a cinch until I started this, so I thought. But, a promise is a promise so I shall attempt to tell you what is in the minds of Hutchinson golfers. Bear with me!About 20 years ago, back in the old high school days (class of '27) Roy Betterson and I used to take advantage of every possible excuse to drive down from Sallna to Hutchinson in the old Model-T to play golf. One week was spent with Ken Keefer, now advertising manager of Dillons, and Jiis mother and father, while playing in the state championship at the old Country Club. Cow Creek, being obnoxious, as it has always been, made it necessary for the tournament to be changed to the Carey Lake course. Meeting Emerson. Carey, jr., his brother, Bill, Ross Wilson, and many others left a feeling that Hutchinson was the very best when it came to golf entertainment. Later, incidentally, Roy Betterson was the pro at the old Carey Club. This was before the war and his army service.Hutchinson has been proud of its Carey Park. It is not only a golf course, but a recreation center where any race or creed can enjoy their activity, whether it be golf, baseball, archery, softball, swimming, horseshoes, picnics, or just a nice ride through the park on a Sunday afternoon. This was, I imagine, Emerson Carey's idea when he left this tract of land to the city. It „ ..was his stipulation that $5000 Keratil Oner* per year, a small expenditure for a city of this size, should be spent for improvements.Carey Park has been a mess since the middle of July. To my knowledge, not one effort has been made by any city official to face the Issue as to why the recreation of the people of Hutchinson has been so completely curtailed, duringfvSome time ago, the former Carey Lake club house was given to the city. The building has been moved and waiting for improvements for over five months. No one is deriving any benefit from this ‘'so-called” improvement but ground squirrels and grasshoppers. According to one local contractor, the building is gradually going to ruin due to weather conditions and neglect. The old club house has been without a roof since the big storm and the new club house, which was to have been completed by the first of August, still remains a derelict. So, what happens during the fall and winter* months? The efforts of the leaders of golf in Hutchinson have availed nothing because of the constant passing the buck” among our city officials. Who is to blame for the sad state of affairs in Carey park! I don't know, but I think the first effort of any civic minded group would be to clean up the place where most of their people have their outside recreation and entertain their out-of-town guests.Have you driven through Oarey park recently! Isn't every reminder of the storm of about six weeks ago still there. I don’t know what, but can't something be done about this deplorable situation?
