Two Southeastern Amateur Athletic Union (SEAAU) records were shattered the first day of the Championship Meet Thursday at Point Mallard Park,Mike Currington. of Birmingham, brokethe existing senior boys 100-meter butterfly record in the preliminaries, then knocked almost two seconds off that time in the finals. The previous record of 1:01.3 was set by Tom Turner in 1967. Currington clocked 1:00.2 Thursday afternoon, then really turned on the power for the new record of 58.6. BSLY’s “A” team has the honor of the new record with a 1:45.1, while fifth placeBSLY “C” team also squeezed by the old 1:47.4 record time with a 1:47.2,Placing second in the event with a 1:46,3 was the Decatur Swim Association’s “A”team of Ray Kyle. Robbie Gibbs, Tim Raths and Lorenzo Jackson. Their performance, far exceeding their previous best efforts brought a surprised exclamation from Coach A1 Orendorf, “They were unbelievable today,” Orendorf claimed after the event.The DSA had their best results in the relays, with five teams placing. Mark Brown’s sixth place finish in the 11-12 year old 200-meter individual medley was the single place taken by an individual for DSA.While none of the girls turned in record-breaking performances, Laury Ad sit of BSLY had quite a day with three wins to her credit, the same as ner teammate Currington.In overall scoring, WVST of Nashville held a narrow lead with a total of 366 points.
